Logan star Hugh Jackman has offered further insight into why he has decided to return as beloved X-Men member Wolverine and team-up with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool in the MCU’s Deadpool & Wolverine. During a recent chat with Fandango, Jackman revealed that he genuinely thought he was “done” with the role following 2017’s Logan but could not get the idea of joining forces with Reynolds’ Merc With a Mouth out of his head.

Jackman, who has now played Wolverine since the first X-Men movie back in 2000 and, so far, is the only actor to ever play the character on the big screen (as an adult, anyway), also revealed that he has been daydreaming about a team-up movie since 2016’s Deadpool.

“I was on my way – I was just driving – and literally just like a bolt of lightning came this knowing, deep in my gut, that I wanted to do this film with Ryan… for Deadpool and Wolverine to come together. And Jacqueline, I swear to you, when I said I was done I really thought I was done. But, in the back of my head, ever since I saw Deadpool 1, I was like ‘Those two characters together…’ I knew it: I knew the fans wanted it. Ever since I put on the claws fans have talked about these two, so that had always been there, but I just knew.”

Related Ryan Reynolds ‘Surprised’ Disney Let Deadpool & Wolverine Be ‘Hard R’ Ryan Reynolds was shocked that Marvel Studios actually gave Deadpool & Wolverine the go-ahead on a hard R-rated installment in the MCU.

Ryan Reynolds has famously been trying to get Jackman back as Wolverine for some time, and while he has finally gotten his way, the Deadpool actor could not help but continue the Reynolds/Jackman feud, calling the X-Men star a “coward” and “liar.”

“Well, I mean, I think we all can now see that Hugh is a liar, you know? A bald-faced horrible coward and a liar. Here he is, back again. You’ll have to find out how he comes back, because that’s one of the most fun aspects of the movie.”

Kevin Feige Advised Hugh Jackman Not to Return as Wolverine in the MCU

Many fans are excited to see Jackman return to don a more comic-accurate costume but, interestingly, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige did not initially think it was a good idea to bring him back. The MCU boss revealed earlier this year that he had even advised Jackman not to do it…

“I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back. You had the greatest ending in history with Logan. That’s not something we should undo.’”

Directed by Shawn Levy from a screenplay he wrote alongside Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells, Deadpool & Wolverine stars Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively, alongside Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen.

The Deadpool sequel will see the character join the MCU after being tasked by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) with a new mission. A mission that will see him travel across the madness of the multiverse.

Deadpool & Wolverine
is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 26, 2024, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
