Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ Pulls Off Incredible Franchise Record at Opening Weekend Box Office

May 27, 2025

Tom Cruise and company just pulled off their biggest stunt yet — breaking franchise records at the global box office. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth and final installment in the long-running action saga, exploded into theatres this weekend with a worldwide debut of $190 million, the highest opening in Mission: Impossible history. With the added boost from the four-day holiday weekend, that figure is expected to push past $200 million by Monday. Domestically, the film grossed $63 million over the standard three-day weekend, with $77 million projected for the full Memorial Day stretch. Internationally, it brought in a massive $127 million from 64 markets — 80% of the international footprint — putting the global total at $190 million through Sunday.
That’s 7% ahead of Dead Reckoning, making The Final Reckoning the best global opening the franchise has ever seen.
It opens in China on May 30, meaning the final international number is still climbing, and pre-sales indicate extremely strong interest. Critics might have been slightly sniffy about it, but audiences sure haven’t. It’s received an A- CinemaScore, matching Rogue Nation and Ghost Protocol, and it’s also got a 90% positive rating on the Rotten Tomatoes PopcornMeter, where it’s also certified fresh with reviewers, even if the score is lower than the previous few films.
With a reported production cost of $400 million, the film needs to outperform Fallout globally — which earned $790 million — to break even. But with this strong start and upcoming launches in major markets like China, it’s off to a promising start, and as a franchise that keeps interest in the films strong via streaming and repeat views, Paramount knows this is an investment into the future.
Is ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ Worth Seeing In Theaters?

Despite some debate over its complexity, Collider’s Ross Bonaime praised the film in his 8/10 review, calling it:

“Stuffed, convoluted, and ludicrous at times. But it’s also mostly a great send-off to this universe, a deserved celebration for everything this series has accomplished.”

He highlighted the underwater sequence and the plane stunt as franchise standouts, saying:

“Even after all these years and remarkable action moments, [the plane sequence] ranks as one of Mission: Impossible’s best.”

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is in theaters now, and if this is truly the end of Ethan Hunt’s story, he’s going out on top.
