‘I’ve Never Gotten a Call’
Aug 22, 2024
As Hollywood’s hottest leading man right now, Glen Powell seems to be everywhere these days, with a couple of exceptions: a Marvel or DC movie. One would assume that — with all his star power — the two studios would be eager to cast him in some form or fashion, but according to him, he has yet to receive a phone call from either Kevin Feige or James Gunn. Powell is fresh off the success of the summer blockbuster, Twisters, and is set to begin filming Edgar Wright’s reboot of The Running Man this fall.
Appearing on The Discourse Podcast (via The Playlist), Powell mentioned that while he’s a big fan of the current crop of superhero movies, he hasn’t been in contact with anyone at Marvel or DC about possibly appearing in an upcoming film. Still, that didn’t stop him from heaping praise upon the newest highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, Deadpool & Wolverine, saying that he “freaking had a blast” while watching it. Check out Powell’s comments below.
“You know
I’ve never gotten a call from DC or Marvel
. But I’m a fan of everything they do. I just saw Deadpool & Wolverine. I freaking had a blast. I think what Shawn [Levy] and Ryan [Reynolds] did with that is extraordinary and just such a fun flavor for audiences. And I cheer for them. And I love what they do. I think James Gunn, Peter Safran, and what they’re doing at DC— I think it’s going to be really, really good for that business. So, it’s like, yeah, I cheer them all on. I’m a big fan of the movies.”
Related The Glenaissance Is Upon Us: Why Glen Powell Is Everywhere With decades of acting under his belt, Powell’s apparent overnight success is only possible because of his steady career trajectory.
Of course, we all know how secretive Marvel and DC are, as they regularly try to keep casting news to a minimum until they can surprise us with a big reveal. Powell could just be throwing up a smoke screen to distract fans, as it’s hard to imagine that he hasn’t had at least a couple of conversations with either studio. We can totally see him as Green Arrow, or even Batman, a role he’s said in the past that he would love to play. Could Powell just be playing coy right now, or is he telling the truth?
Glen Powell Addresses Backdraft Casting Rumors
While Powell might not be officially attached to star in an upcoming Marvel or DC movie, there was a lot of buzz earlier this year surrounding his involvement in a possible remake of the classic 1991 Kurt Russell firefighter film, Backdraft. Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer made mention that he was set to helm the new project, but Powell says there’s no truth to that whatsoever.
“Yeah, that’s not really a thing. So, I’m not really sure,” he said during the same interview on The Discourse Podcast. Powell would elaborate further, mentioning that he’s definitely a fan of Backdraft, but when it comes to him starring in any sort of reboot, he “can’t really speak to that.”
“I mean, obviously, I’m a fan of Backdraft. I think Backdraft is an incredible film. I’m a huge Kurt Russell fan, as well. I think it’s a world that’s ripe for exploration, but not in terms of me around it. That’s nothing I can really speak to.”

With Marvel and DC seemingly uninterested in casting Powell at the moment, and Backdraft off the table, that’s not to say that the 35-year-old megastar has any shortage of work. In addition to filming The Running Man this fall, his next film, the black comedy Huntington, is currently in post-production. Additionally, Powell is also attached to star in the latest by J.J. Abrams alongside Jenna Ortega, but as of now the film remains a secret. We’ll have more news as it becomes available.
