James Gunn Addresses Disney Interference in Guardians of the Galaxy 3

Home Movie News James Gunn Addresses Disney Interference in Guardians of the Galaxy 3

James Gunn responded to a fan who was worried over the potential “messing” of Disney in the editing of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Marvel Studios

James Gunn is entering the final leg of his Marvel journey as he comes close to completing editing on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. Despite having taken over as the join CEO of DC Studios, Gunn is fully committed to ending his Marvel run on a high, and that means giving his all to the last installment of the Guardians trilogy. Gunn recently addressed a suggestion by one of his Twitter followers that Disney could be getting involved in the editing of the movie. He said:

“No, they aren’t. They’ve never touched any of the Guardians’ movies. The movie’s almost finished being edited, is in great shape, and Fred and Greg (my editors) and I are the only ones editing anything.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy movies have been one of the unexpected jewels in the MCU crown, taking a group of characters from Marvel Comics that were not the most well-known and turning them into household names. Now this iteration of the group is coming to an end, and which of the members will survive to carry on in the MCU is unclear, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol, 3 is already building up to be one of the biggest movies of 2023.

How Much Involvement Does Disney Have In Marvel Movies?

According to recent reports, and despite fan opinions, Disney don’t have too much involvement in the production of Marvel movies and TV shows. This has come to be questioned more and more as the MCU heads towards some mature content such as the arrival of Deadpool, and future projects such as Marvel Zombies. In relation to Deadpool in particular, fans have been very vocal about how Disney will “water down” or “ruin” the character by attempting to blend him into the MCU’s family friendly approach. Deadpool 3’s writers however, have previously dispelled that rumor, claiming instead that Disney have been fully supportive of Deadpool remaining as an R-rated character in the MCU. Screenwriters Rhett Reese previously said:

“Don’t worry about that. They’ve been very supportive with regard to that. Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing because, obviously, we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success, and they’ve had their own even greater success. So hopefully, it’ll be a marriage made in heaven. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel.”

It seems that in general, even though fans believe otherwise, Disney are not as controlling over the content that goes out under their banner as they have been made out to be. Having seen many fans decry Predator prequel Prey until it made its debut and became one of the best rated movies in the franchise, the idea of Disney messing with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is just another example of fans getting overprotective of projects that are only going to turn out as their creative team intend.
