James Gunn Breaks Down New ‘Creature Commandos’ Team For Season 2

Jan 22, 2025

James Gunn has broken down the new team members teased in the Season 1 finale of Creature Commandos. The first entry in the DCU introduced a vast array of colorful and unique characters, though sadly, not everyone made it out alive before the episode’s final moments. With Creature Commandos already being confirmed for Season 2, many fans were anticipating a tease of the future in the finale, but nobody could have expected what was in store. A new roster for the Creature Commandos was unveiled, including a returning favorite from the DCEU and two background characters from earlier in the season.
While speaking with Rotten Tomatoes following the Season 1 finale of Creature Commandos, James Gunn broke down the reveal of some of the new teammates. The lineup features returning heroes The Bride, Doctor Phosphorus, Weasel, and “A new and improved G.I. Robot; he’s not dead after all, he’s a robot.” The team also includes King Shark, the same one from 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Other new members include two faces who were briefly glimpsed in episode four, “Chasing Squirrels”, the vampire bat creature Nosferata and a mummy named Khalis. Khalis is one that Gunn likely will have the most fun with, saying, “We’ve got a mummy happening. I’m pretty interested in how we do a mummy. I’ve never been a big mummy guy. I’m a werewolf guy, to be honest with you.”
King Shark was one of the surviving members of Task Force X at the end of The Suicide Squad, and much like Weasel, he has now been transferred over to Task Force M. Played on set by John Economos actor Steve Agee and voiced by Sylvester Stallone in the live-action film, Diedrich Bader instead voiced King Shark in his Creature Commandos role. The character’s inclusion continues the trend of firmly establishing Gunn’s previous DC projects like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker as part of his new DCU.
Meet The New Faces of ‘Creature Commandos’

Nosferata was created by Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett and made her debut in Superboy Vol 4 #50 in April 1998. She is a vampire creature who is a foe of Superboy, the clone of Superman. She appeared in the episode “Chasing Squirrels” as another inmate at Belle Reve. She was an associate of Congorilla before the Bride beat him to a pulp for bullying Nina Mazursky. Gunn had previously spoken about almost including her as a member of the Creature Commandos team for Season 1. With Superman being a relatively new figure in the DCU, it is unlikely she will have a history with Superboy. She could have been put in Belle Reve by any number of characters, possibly Batman, given his history with a similar vampire-themed foe, Nocturna.

Khalis is a relatively new character created by Jeff Lemire and Alberto Ponticelli. He debuted in Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #1 in November 2011. Agents of S.H.A.D.E. in the comics are very much a Creature Commandos-type unit of supernatural-themed heroes working for the government. Khalis was Hetepkheti Tefnakhte, a priest who lived in the city of Bubastis in Ancient Egypt in the year 2030 B.C. He is typically an enemy of Doctor Fate, but the Pierce Brosnan version of the character introduced in Black Adam is not part of Gunn’s new DCU as of this moment. Hawkgirl’s complicated comic book history sometimes features her as the reincarnated soul of an Egyptian priestess. With Isabela Merced set to play Hawgirl in Superman, she could have imprisoned Khalis in the DCU. While fans wait for Creature Commandos Season 2, these new and returning faces tease some exciting possibilities.
