James Gunn Confirms Another Character Returning From The Suicide Squad for his DC Revival

May 10, 2023

Through James Gunn’s process of reviving the DCU, which he’s since called a “hard reboot,” among other things, one noticeable pattern is standing out. So far, he’s been picking and choosing a handful of characters (and their respective actors) from the now-old era of DC and carrying them over into his now-established universe, particularly ones from his previous projects. To keep his hype train going, Gunn has now confirmed that one more of those familiar characters will be returning, though one that fans might not expect. Contrary to the overwhelming hope of it being Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, it’s a character who’s ironically had far less of a spotlight.

In Gunn’s initial announcement of the anticipated lineup of ten projects, five series, and five films, the first one to kick off Chapter One: Gods and Monsters will be an animated series called Creature Commandos. In an interestingly similar premise to The Suicide Squad (2021), the story of Creature Commandos revolves around a military band of monsters and superhumans that embark on missions during World War II. The comics have changed their roster over the years, including a vampire, a gorgon, a werewolf, and even Frankenstein. Gunn is undoubtedly adjusting the lineup to suit his creative vision, but thanks to a report from CinemaBlend, we now know that, straight from The Suicide Squad film, Weasel will be included in the ranks.

For those who recall his brief appearance in the opening sequence of the previous film, James Gunn’s own brother Sean was the motion capture actor who brought Weasel to life. Fresh off his work on The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, it’s safe to say he’ll likely reprise that role again. Gunn has also confirmed the other members of Creature Commandos, which seem to include new DCU inductees so far.

“Rick Flag Sr. Okay. And then, you know, he’s going to show up in other stuff. That’s Nina Mazursky. That’s Dr. Phosphorus, a Batman villain. Eric Frankenstein. Bride of Frankenstein, who’s the lead. G.I. Robot. And Weasel. You learn a little bit about him, and a lot about his past.”

Creature Commandos is currently set as the first project in Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, but with production needs, that could always change. The series is coming exclusively to HBO Max, with no release window as of yet.

Gunn Continues to Revive Characters From The Past

To date, James Gunn has kept two of the biggest characters from his adaption of The Suicide Squad (2021), Amanda Waller and Peacemaker, played by Viola Davis and John Cena, respectively. However, Waller went on to make a cameo appearance in Gunn’s spin-off Peacemaker (2022) and now finally has her own series in the works.

Meanwhile, Peacemaker is still out for blood and justice in the next season of his own series, and both he and Waller could very well make other appearances, should Gunn deem it so. Now with Weasel joining the cast of Creature Commandos, albeit in animated form, it leaves audiences wondering if Gunn will resurrect any other characters for his pile of upcoming projects. Questions like whether Gal Gadot will reprise Wonder Woman in Gunn’s universe and Margot Robbie’s future as Harley Quinn still loom large.
