James Gunn Gives a Disappointing Update on Keanu Reeves’ ‘Constantine 2’

Oct 23, 2025

It’s been two decades since Keanu Reeves’ Constantine took fans by storm and set a benchmark for telling gritty supernatural stories in the superhero genre. Fans got a new hope of seeing the exorcist back on the big screen when a sequel was announced in 2022, with Reeves and original director Francis Lawrence set to return. However, the development process has been slow and painful when it comes to getting the script finalized. Nonetheless, DCU co-head James Gunn has given a rare update on Constantine 2. Constantine more than likely falls in the DC Elseworlds category of the new universe, which is also home to Matt Reeves’ The Batman and its characters. While Gunn is not directly invested in the development of these projects in the same way he was with Superman and Peacemaker, as co-head of DC, he has a part to play. He has been providing updates on Reeves’ The Batman II previously, and now he has opened up about the Constantine sequel in a new interview. He revealed:
“I’ve discussed it on and off. I’ve discussed it with Keanu. I think that’s a great group of guys. I like all those people a lot, I think they’re talented. But I have not read any script yet.”
Gunn’s comments come after Keanu Reeves gave a hopeful update on the sequel’s script earlier this month. “Fingers crossed. Another draft of the script came in. We’re waiting. We’re gonna take it to the studio and hopefully they like it too.” So by all accounts, the movie’s development is swiftly rolling behind the scenes. The original feature enjoys the cult classic status, and anything less than mindblowing will not be accepted by fans of the character or the actor.
What’s Taking So Long for Constantine 2?

It was previously reported that Reeves wasn’t happy with the script. Peter Stormare, who played the devil in the original film, opened up about wanting to do another “grounded and spiritual” sequel. He further explained, “I think he wants to do his character again, Constantine, as grounded as it was in the first one. It took a long time for you to become a cult movie, it really worked, and it will work on the audience again. You don’t have to add a lot of action and shootouts. You have other movies. Don’t turn it into big Marvel… [Don’t turn it] into us flying around in harnesses all the time and shooting each other up. Don’t bring in the big guns. Let it be.” Constantine 2 has no release date. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
