James Gunn Gives Encouraging Update On DC’s Black Superman Movie

May 5, 2023

Ta-Nehisi Coates’ upcoming Black Superman movie gets a new update from DC Studios boss James Gunn. While a new Superman movie is in the works for the DC Universe, there is also an Elseworlds project related to the Man of Steel. Long before DC Studios was even launched, a Superman reboot with a Black lead had been put into development with J.J. Abrams as an executive producer. Coates was tapped to write the screenplay for the new take on the Man of Tomorrow, but few updates have come out since the initial announcement.

In a recent interview with Gizmodo, Gunn was asked about the future of the Black Superman movie, and he revealed it may still move forward. While he hasn’t read the script yet, Gunn called it an “exciting movie” that would, much like The Batman and Joker, exist outside the main DC Universe continuity. He said:

Those two things are totally unrelated. That’s an exciting movie. I know that Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely excited about it. So if it comes in and it’s great, which I haven’t read the script, and if the timing is right, that could absolutely happen. That’s totally unrelated. It would be an Elseworlds tale like Joker.

Everything We Know About DC’s Black Superman Movie

After the Black Superman movie was first announced in 2021, a few details about the film have emerged over the years. While it would feature a Black actor as the Man of Steel, the story would still center on Clark Kent, making this the first time a DC live-action project has featured Superman with a different ethnicity. Even though Abrams was attached to executive produce, the plan was never for him to direct it, as the studio was committed to finding a Black director for the reboot.

Back when the Black Superman movie was put into development, reports claimed it would follow Kal-El during the 20th century. As far as other DC characters go, there was never any information on whether Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen or Lex Luthor would appear. The last time there were any updates on the project was in December 2022, almost right after the announcement about Gunn writing the new Superman: Legacy movie.

If the Black Superman movie goes forward, it will be intriguing to see what vision Coates ends up going with, as it’s unclear what the current version looks like. DC Studios’ priority is on Superman: Legacy at the moment, meaning that even if Coates’ film goes forward, it would likely not go into production any time soon. But hopefully, more news will be revealed about the Black Superman project sooner rather than later.
