James Gunn Reveals ‘Justice League’ DCU Film in ‘Avengers’ Style Team-Up
Mar 3, 2025
When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the Co-Chairmen of DC Studios, they made their goal as clear as possible: to build an interconnected universe of movies and television projects across various mediums. Not only that, but Gunn and Safran also wanted to also ensure that every project is standalone, and could be enjoyed without having to watch a previous film or television show before it. However, one can’t help but wonder to what end this first chapter in the new DCU, titled Gods and Monsters, is headed towards. In a press conference providing updates on various DC projects, Gunn briefly discussed the possibility of a Justice League film down the line.
Per Variety’s report at the conference, Gunn revealed that there is a tentative six-year plan for the development of various projects that would eventually lead to an Avengers-style team-up movie. Gunn, who is as cautious as ever, would only provide the ambiguous quote that solidified the stance of each project being able to be enjoyed on its own while also still being a part of something bigger, saying: “It isn’t like they’re chapters of an overall story. They’re characters that are part of an overall story.”

James Gunn and Peter Safran are very excited at the idea of a horror film in the DCU.
Safran would also provide his input, saying that the point of revitalizing the DC Universe is that “people want to see these iconic characters interacting.” He also teased a team-up movie down the line, ambiguously stating that “we’re heading somewhere. There’s a plan for movies with more characters.”
DC Studios Is Taking Their Time With a Team-Up Film

Given how the last iteration of the DC Universe (formerly known as the DCEU) ended, it is no surprise that James Gunn and Peter Safran are taking a slower approach to their worldbuilding. Studio heads mishandled Zack Snyder’s intention for a trilogy of Justice League films, resulting in the director leaving the DCEU entirely. His version of the first Justice League film only saw the light of day after several years of fan outcries, and the continuity that was so quickly set up in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was eventually disregarded altogether.
With Superman due to be released this year and a new Batman for the DCU also planned for sometime in the future, the seeds are currently being planted for some of the most iconic heroes in DC Comics to interact on the big screen once again. Moreover, with new team-ups and characters like The Authority and Supergirl, there will also be plenty of other characters that can play a role in an ensemble film that could be just as exciting as any Avengers movie.
Overall, the cautious state of developing projects at DC Studios has helped reassure fans that any sort of team-up down the line will be rewarding on a thematic level. For now, Gunn is focused on completing Superman, which is gearing up to be one of the most anticipated summer blockbusters of 2025. Should the film prove successful, it’s safe to say that fans will be in for the long haul in this new DCU.
