James Gunn Says SUPERGIRL is The Next DC Movie After SUPERMAN Because Its “Incredible Script” — GeekTyrant
Jul 3, 2025
James Gunn continues to make it clear that in the new DCU, quality takes the lead, no exceptions, no shortcuts.During a recent chat with Omelete, Gunn explained why Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is officially the second film being released, right after Superman flies into theaters. It’s not because of a grand connected-universe strategy, it’s because the script rips.“I didn’t necessarily know that Supergirl would be the second movie we were going to make, but Ana [Nogueira] wrote an incredible script, and then we hired an incredible director. We’re going to do this movie after Superman because he was the best option.”The film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Danvers and will be directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella). It’s based on the acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic by Tom King, but with some deeper cuts worked in, including early material from King’s drafts and the addition of Lobo (Jason Momoa). The story follows Kara as she journeys across the stars on a mission of vengeance, tracking down the killer of a young girl’s father, a cosmic western of sorts, with Gunn added:“Other movies have been written, but they haven’t been as good as this one. So we’re going to keep going with that. Everything has to be good. Quality comes first in every project we do. And that’s more important than telling a grandiose mega-narrative.”That focus on storytelling over spectacle isn’t just talk. Gunn previously admitted that he recently shut down a fully greenlit project because the script wasn’t strong enough, even though everyone else was ready to roll cameras.“We just killed a project. Everybody wanted to make the movie. It was greenlit, ready to go. The screenplay wasn’t ready. And I couldn’t do a movie where the screenplay’s not good.”Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow lands in theaters June 26, 2026, and if Gunn’s instincts are right, this one could be the surprise heart of the new DCU.
