Home Movie News James Gunn Wants Ben Affleck as a Director in the DCU, But For the ‘Right Project’
James Gunn’s recent comments suggest Ben Affleck’s potential return to the DC Universe as a director.
Warner Bros. Pictures
James Gunn, the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, recently indicated his interest in having Ben Affleck as a potential director for one of their projects. The renowned actor has also directed some notable films such as Argo, Live by Night, and other projects in the works. The most recent of these is Air Jordan, which tells the story of shoe salesman Sonny Vaccaro and how he led Nike in its pursuit of the basketball superstar Michael Jordan.
Gunn recently revealed on Twitter that a new Superman film was in the works. However, he also explicitly stated that he was very interested in having Affleck as a director. Although Gunn didn’t reveal whether it would be for the Superman movie, he emphasized that finding the right project for Affleck was essential. “Met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project.” James’ tweet was in response to a fan asking if Affleck would direct the new film.
It would be an intriguing creative decision, given Affleck’s history with the DC universe. Affleck first portrayed Bruce Wayne in Batman v. Superman before taking on the character again in Justice League in 2017. So perhaps James Gunn is setting up Ben Affleck for a triumphant return to DC Films as a director.

James Gunn and Peter Safran have been hard at work finalizing a DC slate of movies sure to excite fans. This talented duo has proven their ability to bring superhero stories to life in a unique and captivating way, leaving viewers eager for more. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman have been the subject of a flurry of reports, so Gunn has resorted to social media to shed some light on the situation. According to Gunn’s recent Twitter revelation, after months of anticipation, the new year will kick off with an exciting announcement about their first projects. “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.”
This was followed by Henry Cavill’s unfortunate goodbye to Superman being made official by James Gunn. Gunn explained that “Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”
Cavill took to Instagram with a statement expressing his sorrow over his departure but also his appreciation for the “fun ride” he’s had playing the iconic superhero. The news comes following a meeting between Gunn and Cavill, which made it clear that his cameo in Black Adam would be the actor’s final outing as Superman. The wait for more details may be excruciating, but what lies ahead promises to exceed expectations.
