James Gunn’s DCU Kicking Off With ‘Funny & Filthy’ Hard R-rated Series

Summary
Frank Grillo describes
Creature Commandos
as “funny and filthy” with a hard R-rating.
Grillo’s character, Rick Flag Sr., is the boss of the group, bringing a gravitas and “I don’t give a s–t” attitude.
Grillo expresses excitement about his future in the DCU, hinting at the possibility of playing his character in live-action and teasing some other secret projects.
Action star Frank Grillo, who will play Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, describes James Gunn’s first DCU animated series as “funny and filthy,” and teases the show’s R-rating. Although all eyes of DC fans are now on Superman: Legacy, which will start shooting next month, the reboot of the Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Comics franchise will in fact kick off later this year in the animated format with the release of Creature Commandos, a very ambitious project developed by Gunn himself. And it seems that it is going to be a wild adventure.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Grillo spoke about his future in the DCU, offering an interesting description of the series, teasing a fun but mature story:
“Sr. is just that, he’s senior, so there’s a gravitas to him I think that that Jr. didn’t have yet. He’s in control, he’s the boss. It’s funny, because when I’m around older guys — who now have to be old, because I’m old — I love listening to them, because there’s an ‘I don’t give a s–t’ attitude about the rest of the world. And I think because this is a hard R — Creature Commandos is a hard R — it’s fun. When we were doing it, I think one day it was me and David Harbour recording, I was on the ground. I had to stop in the recording studio, I had to go on the ground and laugh, that’s how funny and filthy it is. [Laughs] It’s amazing, I’m so happy to be a part of it. I think that is what’s different is this guy’s the boss, and he’s grizzled, white on the sides, and white in the beard, and I’m leaning into all that.”
The actor also spoke about the possibility of playing his character in live-action as well, pehaps even multiple times:
“But, you know, James Gunn and Peter Safran over at DC have given me a great opportunity with Creature Commandos — and some other things that I’m not allowed to talk about — and I’m looking forward to the future with these guys in the DCU across the board. I think they’ve got some amazing stuff planned in the next year or two.”
