Jason Momoa Stars In Apple’s Hawaiian Colonization Action Drama Series

How did Hawai’i deal with a significant point in its history? “Chief of War” sees a warrior, Ka’iana, attempt to unite the islands. His world is even more complicated by the looming threats posed by colonization. Jason Momoa portrays Ka’iana, but this project is far more than a starring role. The actor, currently winning over fans in “A Minecraft Movie,” co-created the series with writer Thomas Pa’a Sibbett. Momoa additionally directs the season finale and co-writes the first episode. Directing duties for the first two episodes go to executive producer Justin Chon.

‘War’ features a talented cast of performers for its first season. Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, and Te Kohe Tuhaka star alongside Momoa. Buchanan is currently appearing as Rose Larkin on Netflix’s hit series “The Night Agent.” Morrison most recently voiced Chief Tui in “Moana 2” and previously worked with Momoa on the DC property “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Star Wars fans will recognize Morrison for his portrayal of Boba Fett across several series and games.

Performed by a predominantly Polynesian cast led by Jason Momoa, “Chief of War” follows the epic and unprecedented telling of the unification and colonization of Hawai‘i at the turn of the 18th century. The ensemble cast includes Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, newcomer Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale‘o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka and Te Kohe Tuhaka.

Showrunner Doug Jung, Sibbett, Momoa, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook, Brian Mendoza, Anders Engstrom, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, Francis Lawrence, and Tim Van Patten serve as executive producers on “Chief of War.” The Apple TV+ series debuts on August 1 with two episodes.
