If there’s a crisis that needs investigation, few plot devices are more perfectly cinematic than the creation of a brand-new team. A keen storyteller can use that setup to bring wildly different operatives together, under unusual circumstances, and for high-stakes reasons. It’s a veritable blank check for conflict, drama, action, suspense, and worldbuilding. It’s consequently a setup for many cinematic masterpieces, from Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai to the original Star Wars and Lord of the Rings trilogies, or even The Avengers. The setup can also be seen throughout TV history in shows like The A-Team, Lost, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and, technically, even Friends, to name a few. Prime Video’s Countdown, the latest from One Chicago and FBI: International EP Derek Haas, similarly assembles a diverse set of skilled misfits to thwart an extremely dangerous plan, resulting in an engaging journey that puts interesting characters in an entertainingly wide array of situations — even if it does take the occasional narrative shortcut or two.
What Is ‘Countdown’ About?

In Countdown, the mysterious, broad daylight murder of a Department of Homeland Security agent provokes Nathan Blythe (Eric Dane) to put together a clandestine task force of agents from various agencies, each of whose effectiveness in the field is matched only by their unconventional, against-the-grain methods. This team includes Mark Meachum (Jensen Ackles), Amber Oliveras (Jessica Camacho), Keyonte Bell (Elliot Knight), Evan Shepherd (Violett Beane), and Lucas Finau (Uli Latukefu), all working to thwart a perilous plot that threatens to endanger American lives as it continues to get darker, twistier, and more complex. Eric Dane builds Blythe into an eminently watchable team lead, simultaneously tough and no-nonsense yet willing to happily flex the rules to get the job done. It’s a great character, and he lands it well. Jensen Ackles has a knack for charismatic, action-friendly characters (as showcased in Supernatural and The Boys), and he uses those talents for another memorable performance here. Ackles’ Meachum is effective in the field and an effective undercover asset when needed, despite having serious concerns of his own. Jessica Camacho brings intensity and depth to Amber Oliveras, who has great on-screen chemistry and banter with Meachum.

‘Countdown’s Cast and Characters Make This Action Series a Fun Watch

As a whole, Countdown’s cast and character dynamics make for an engaging watch. The design of the series—combining a whole multi-agency team of agents who don’t play by the rules and have adept research and undercover skills—is a good premise for atypical plotting. The narrative also provides unexpected legs of the investigation that are often well-mined for a drama that stands out in a saturated subgenre. Taking advantage of characters’ knacks for undercover work, for example, puts them in novel situations throughout the season. These routinely distinct events mean that Countdown gets to set up and utilize a wide array of set pieces for action, drama, and suspense, including car stunts, tense prison situations, computer investigations, and deep cover ops. It’s a variety that isn’t always seen in shows of this kind, but considering the backgrounds of the characters, it fits well. Some plot contrivances are fairly transparent in this effort, like an agent having a history with exactly the right person to get in deeper with the player connected to the investigation’s next lead. Some of the linkages and discoveries come a little too easily. That said, these convenient solutions aren’t so brazen that they outweigh the joys of watching the conflict play out. Countdown isn’t quite original enough in its premise to completely feel like a breath of fresh air. Still, it capably makes use of compelling characters, strong performers, and an evolving situation with dangerous implications. It’s set apart a bit further from other shows of its kind thanks to a sunny, modern Los Angeles setting, which goes to dark places but sidesteps stereotypical locales. The series is full of everything the genre promises, from car chase stunts and melee combat to bourgeois galas and governmental intrigue, and it balances those different elements well. There’s even a hint that much more can be done in this world if future seasons are on the table. Countdown premieres June 25 on Prime Video.
