Jeremy Renner Turned Down MCU Return for ‘Hawkeye’ Season 2 After Being Offered Half Pay
May 4, 2025
Jeremy Renner has portrayed Clint Barton/Hawkeye in seven projects related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his last appearance as the character was in the Disney+ miniseries Hawkeye
, which premiered in 2021. Since then, Renner has showcased that he is much stronger than any superhero following his miraculous recovery from a snowplow accident at the top of 2023, which nearly cost him his life. Following the life-changing incident, Renner steadily got back to work on other projects but has still been absent from the MCU. As it turns out, the actor was offered a return as Clint Barton for another season of Hawkeye, but his offer to reprise the role was insulting at best.
During an interview with High Performance, Renner revealed that he was offered “half” of what he made for the first season of Hawkeye to return for Season 2. While he didn’t reveal the exact amount, it’s obvious it wasn’t going to be worth all the time that would be put into putting on a project of that magnitude. Renner said:
“They asked me to do Season 2, and they offered me half the money. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half of the amount of money, and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount.”

Jeremy Renner Suffered A Near-Fatal Accident in 2023
The accident that Renner endured took place on January 1, 2023, when the actor suffered blunt chest trauma and 38 broken bones after saving his nephew from being run over by a snowplow and being hit himself. Renner’s injuries were severe and, following surgery, he remained in an intensive care unit in critical condition. However, in something that can be described as a miraculous recovery, Renner was released from the hospital on January 17, 2023, and continued his recovery at home. Within three months, he was able to walk with a cane, and each step of his progress was said to be a testament to the actor’s perseverance and strong mental and physical health.
When debating why he was offered only half of the salary he made for Season 1 of Hawkeye, Renner insinuated that he believed it could be linked to the 2023 accident. The actor said, “I’m like, ‘I’m sorry? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season?'” Renner went on to say that Marvel didn’t seem to be the ones involved in the decision and put it on the accountants who work for Disney.
“This is not Marvel, mind you. This is like, just Disney, not even really Disney. It’s just the penny pinchers, the accountants. I told them to go fly a kite. I mean, just at the insult offer. So we didn’t see eye to eye on it. Sadly, I still love the character. I’d still love to do it, but I had to defend myself. I didn’t ask for any more money, mind you. Just pay me what I made the first season. So it’s all disheartening that didn’t happen, but that’s fine. I’m happy to let that go, because my body’s probably thanking me, time and time again, that I’m not doing it right now. But we’ll see.”
Hawkeye ran for six episodes and focused on Clint Barton (Renner) partnering with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) and training her as a protégé of sorts as he confronted enemies from his past. The series also starred Tony Dalton, Fra Fee, Brian d’Arcy James, Aleks Paunovic, Piotr Adamczyk, Linda Cardellini, Simon Callow, Vera Farmiga, Alaqua Cox, Zahn McClarnon, Florence Pugh and Vincent D’Onofrio.
