Jerrod Carmichael’s New Comedy Special Debuts May 24
May 9, 2025
Having recently appeared in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” and the Sundance dramedy “On The Count Of Three,” Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael’s career as an actor is still growing and evolving. But the funny man’s bread and butter is still stand-up comedy which he does so well at. So, he’s returning to the stage for his fourth HBO stand-up special, “Don’t Be Gay” later this month.
Carmichael famously came out of the closet during his acclaimed 2022 comedy special, “Rothaniel,” for which he won his first Emmy Award (Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special and he also won a WGA Best Television Writing in a Comedy/Variety Specials for “Rothaniel” too).

As a follow up to “Rothaniel,” the special “Don’t Be Gay” tackles that very subject: how to openly talk about his relationship, his feelings, and what he says was breaking the cardinal rule of growing up in a straight, heteronormative household: being gay. “I broke the only rule, y’all,” he says in the special.
Knowing Carmichael who blends irreverent comedy with super vulnerable honesty, his family’s presumed backlash or shock to him coming out is likely something the special will explore.
Yesterday, HBO the official trailer and poster for Carmichael’s “Don’t Be Gay” an original comedy special debuting Saturday, May 24, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.
The comedian is originally from Winston-Salem, N.C, and his series “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,” as well as his most recent special “Rothaniel” (2022), are available to stream on Max now.
