Joker 2 Reveals New Look at Joaquin Phoenix on Set

Jul 1, 2023

Joker is coming back to the screen. Despite recent announcements from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn about the next steps on the franchise’s extender universe, the Joaquin Phoenix starring sequel it’s still on track, with Lady Gaga joining the oscar-winning actor to play the legendary Harley Quin.

Todd Phillips is back to getting behind the cameras for Joker: Folie a Deux. The title that the new movie receives refers to two people with the same clinical condition, probably Arthur Fleck and his new lover, who he’ll meet inside the unhappy facilities of Arkham Asylum, a famous place in Gotham City.

After revealing the first look at Gaga’s character for Valentine’s Day, new images (courtesy of House of DC), show Phoenix’s main character/villain walking around the streets in the full Joker look:

The movie is rumored to be a musical, which would make sense with the singer on board, that will tell the unhealthy and toxic “love story” that reunites two of the most iconic Batman villains. However, according to recent information, the film will not rigorously follow the famous storyline of Harley in the animated series but will see her as another Arkham patient instead of Joker’s psychiatrist.

Joker 2 and Other DC Elseworld’s Projects
Warner Bros. Pictures

Joker 2 will be part of a slot of upcoming projects that will coexist with DC Studios’ new canon without being part of it. These include The Batman Part 2, the long-awaited sequel to Robert Pattinson’s version of the Caped Crusader, which will arrive in 2025. Inside the same universe, HBO Max will release an original series centered on Colin Farrell’s Penguin, leading directly to The Dark Knight’s new adventure.

Another important movie from Elseworlds will be Constantine 2, which will see the return of Keanu Reeves as the paranormal detective, with Francis Lawrence coming back to direct. The film is already in development. Superman will also have an alternative version, with Calvin Ellis being the Man of Steel. There’s no current information about this project, but Michael B. Jordan could be the main star.

On the small screen, Clark Kent could have another identity with Tyler Hoechlin reprising his role in Superman & Lois, but it’s still uncertain if the series will go on beyond its third season. Same case with Gotham Knights, which will arrive on The CW this same month. And last but not least, Kaley Cuoco’s Harley Quinn has already confirmed her return, with it being the most optimistic TV project to continue.
