The First Joker Saw Huge Success at the Box Office
Joker (2019) Release Date October 2, 2019 Runtime 122 Tagline We live in a society

Released back in 2019 and directed by Todd Phillips, the first outing for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker details the origin of this alternate Clown Prince of Crime. Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks, the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he’s part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker.

Joker quickly became a major success at the box office, grossing over $1 billion and thus being named the first R-rated movie to ever do so. The DC project emerged as the sixth highest-grossing movie of the year and saw praise from critics and audiences heaped upon both Phoenix’s central performance and Todd Phillips’ direction. While critics were somewhat divided on certain aspects of Joker, most notably the portrayal of mental illness, opinion was unanimous regarding Phoenix’s dedicated work as Arthur Fleck, with the actor taking home the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Warner Bros. will be hoping to echo this same success with Joker: Folie à Deux, and with Phoenix and Phillips set to return alongside the introduction of Lady Gaga as beloved DC supervillain Harley Quinn, everything is in place to give it every chance to do just that.

Joker: Folie à Deux
is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 4, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
