Jon Favreau Has Already Written ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 4 & Talks About The Expanding ‘Star Wars’ Continuity
Feb 22, 2023
We are just a week away from the debut of Season 3 of the hit Disney+ series, “The Mandalorian.” The first, and most popular, live-action “Star Wars” series on the streamer is set to continue the story of a lone warrior and his little friend as they travel around the galaxy and get into all sorts of hijinks. But even though Season 3 has yet to even debut, series showrunner Jon Favreau is already teasing the fact that Season 4 is already written.

Speaking to the French outlet, BFM TV, Jon Favreau talked about Season 4 of “The Mandalorian” and where in the development cycle it exists right now. Apparently, Season 4 is already written. Why did Favreau finish writing the fourth season before the third even debuts? Well, much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Favreau has to worry about a variety of projects existing in the same continuity, which requires a bit of forethought.
“Season 4? Yeah, I’ve written it already,” said Favreau. “We have to know where we are going to tell a fully formed story. So, we had mapped it out, Dave [Filoni] and I. And then slowly you just write each episode. So I was writing it during post-production because all of it has to feel like a continuation and one full story.”

He continued by explaining that it’s more imperative than ever to map out these shows in advance because the franchise is about to grow even bigger with the additions of “Ahsoka” and “The Skeleton Crew.” Favreau said “The Mandalorian” and those new shows “all take place within the same ‘Star Wars’ time period. There’s a lot more things that we’ve got to keep in mind and also stuff that we’ve built up to from previous seasons of ‘The Mandalorian’ as well.”
While we know when Season 3 of “The Mandalorian” will debut, we’re still unsure when we might see “Ahsoka” and “The Skeleton Crew.” We know both are well within their production cycle, with “Ahsoka” seemingly the next one to debut. So, it would seem as if there might be some crossover potential between the series. “Ahsoka” follows the story of the title character, played by Rosario Dawson. We’ve seen this version of the character already show up in live-action on “The Mandalorian,” so it would make sense for these two shows to crossover again in the future.

However, “The Skeleton Crew,” while taking place in the same time period, doesn’t seem like it would have much crossover appeal, considering that it follows a new group of young characters as they go on an adventure. But who knows? Maybe little Baby Yoda, aka Grogu, will find himself showing up in that show, as well.
“The Mandalorian” Season 3 is set to debut on Disney+ on March 1.
