Jon Watts Calls Dave Filoni The ‘Star Wars’ “Goalkeeper” Who Helps Protect Canon
Sep 18, 2024
It’s not a secret that Dave Filoni has been one of the leading creative minds at Lucasfilm for a while now. He, especially, is someone that has provided guidance to those creating “Star Wars” TV series. And according to the folks behind the upcoming show, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” his knowledge of canon means he is one of the leading guiding voices at the studio.

Speaking to EW, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” co-creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford explained just how involved Dave Filoni was during the creation of the upcoming series. Watts actually uses a sports term to describe the role Filoni has. Basically, if you want to try something new and different, it first has to get past Filoni.
“He actually is a great hockey player, but he’s also a figurative goalkeeper,” said Watts. “We will come up with ideas of things that we like, and then he’ll be like, ‘Actually, maybe it’s this.’ Or, ‘Oh, we already did something like that somewhere else.’ And you always end up with a bunch of other episodes of ‘Star Wars’ to go watch and things to go read, and it’s good. You feel like you can safely explore things creatively without making some huge canonical mistake.”
Ford added, “And he gets both sides of that because he did that [mentoring under] George Lucas. So he gets that thing of, ‘I want to make a whole new kind of a Jedi,’ and then someone being like, ‘Okay, hold on. A lot of people have thought about this. Let’s do this the right way.’ And it’s so helpful.”
While there are many that love the job Filoni has done since being such an integral part of the “Star Wars” creative process, there are plenty of others out there who aren’t a fan of his. But as we’ve seen the years go by since “The Mandalorian” first debuted, we’ve seen Filoni’s creative input grow, as well. Not only is he actively creating new shows and films for Lucasfilm, but clearly, he’s also really involved in other projects as well.

Sure, it doesn’t seem as if he’s the Kevin Feige of “Star Wars.” (That title is still with Kathleen Kennedy.) But David Filoni clearly is one of the creative masterminds behind the current crop of “Star Wars” TV series and films.
“Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew” debuts on Disney+ on December 3.
