Julia Garner & Anthony Boyle To Star In Netflix’s Limited Series About Cryptocurrency Exchange FTX

May 29, 2025

Julia Garner has two buzzy movies in theaters in this summer: “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” on July 25, then Zach Cregger‘s “Weapons” on August 8.  So what’s the actress have lined up after those projects? According to Variety, she’ll be back to Netflix for a new limited series.READ MORE: ‘Fantastic Four’ Star Julia Garner Talks “Ambiguous Energy” For Her Silver Surfer: “You’re Not Sure Where She Stands”

That news may surprise fans, who expected Garner to break out more after “Ozark” ended in 2022.  But “The Altruists” still sounds like a promising gig, all about the rise and fall of FTX, the cryptocurrency exchange that imploded three years ago, with billions of dollars in customer funds vanishing in the process.  Garner will play CEO of FTX-affiliated Alameda Resarch Caroline Ellison in the eight-episode series, with Anthony Boyle set to star opposite her as the exchange’s founder, Sam Bankman-Fried.  Both Ellison and Bankman-Fried were convicted on various counts of wire and securities fraud and money laundering.

Here’s an official logline for “The Altruists,” courtesy of Netflix:

The story of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, two hyper-smart, ambitious young idealists who tried to remake the global financial system in the blink of an eye – and then seduced, coaxed, and teased each other into stealing $8 billion.

Graham Moore and Jacqueline Hoyt serve as co-showrunners and executive producers on the new series. Garner also executive produces “The Altruists.” James Ponsoldt directs the show’s first episode and executive produces as well.  Other executive producers include Vannie Malhotra and Jessie Dicovitsky via Higher Ground Productions, Scoop Wassterstein for New York Magazine/Vox Media Studios, Tonia Davis, and Lauren Morelli.

“The Altruists” will be Garner’s third series for Netflix after “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna,” another Vox/New York Mag-Netflix co-production.  Garner received Emmy nods for both shows, so returning to Netflix for another series is hardly a career backslide.  Still, despite strong turns in films like “The Royal Hotel,” Garner’s post-“Ozark” career didn’t see her soar.  Maybe that’s in due time, after “First Steps” and “Weapons” live up to their summer box office potential.

As for Boyle, his TV credits include FX‘s “Say Nothing,” Apple TV+‘s “Masters Of The Air” and “Manhunt,” and HBO‘s “The Plot Against America.” On the film side, he’s recently done the likes of “Tetris” and “Tolkein.” But Boyle’s biggest claim to fame remains his role as Scorpius Malfoy in the West End and Broadway productions of “Harry Potter And The Cursed Child,” which earned him an Olivier Award and Tony and Drama Desk nods.

If “The Altruists” hits production this year, expect it on Netflix in late 2026.
