King Ed Featured, Reviews Film Threat
Jul 22, 2024
In his short film, King Ed, Nick Fascitelli tells a strange tale about love and finding one’s soulmate. Ed (Brendan Scannell) finds himself at a crossroads in his love life. After being dumped by his ex-lover, Joseph (Nick Fascitelli), Ed finds himself drawn to the mysterious Ketamine Oracle (Sufe Bradshaw) for answers. She uncovers that Ed returned to Joseph after being presented with the “perfect playlist.” A playlist so perfect that Ed mistakenly thought Joseph knew everything about Ed…but Joseph got the playlist from someone else.
If Ed can find the person who put that playlist together, his search for love will be complete. That journey leads Ed to a small church in L.A. and the good-looking director of its Gay Men’s Choir.
“She uncovers that Ed returned to Joseph after being presented with the ‘perfect playlist.’”
I call King Ed strange, and it is. Ultimately, for writer/director Nick Fascitelli, King Ed is a fantasy story about love. Ed is on a hero’s quest to find his soulmate—the one who put together a playlist that speaks directly to Ed as a person and his heart. It’s a fantasy as the spirit of the Ketamine Oracle leads him in both body and soul. The ending may surprise you as well.
For anyone who has been frustrated by the pursuit of everlasting love will find Ed’s dilemma very familiar. Though told from a gay man’s perspective, the idea of a soulmate lends credence to the fantasy nature of this story, and Fascitelli’s charm brings color and life to this tale.
