The King of the Monsters returns! Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is an upcoming sequel series to 2021’s feature film Godzilla vs. Kong, which takes place in the Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse. And the new show will stream exclusively on Apple TV+. Hollywood A-lister Kurt Russell and his real-life son, Wyatt, will star as the same character, Lee Shaw, whose life is revealed over the span of several decades — as is his connection to the greatest of all the Titans. Check out the new images (via Variety) from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters below:
Godzilla himself takes center stage in the first-look photos from Apple TV+’s streaming series. The King of the Monsters roars above a rain-soaked school bus in one of the pictures, while both the younger Shaw (Wyatt) and modern-day Shaw (Kurt) are featured in two separate images. Neither Russel nor his son have appeared in the MonsterVerse film series, which began nine years ago with director Gareth Edwards’ big-screen Godzilla (2014).
Matt Shakman (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, WandaVision) is set to direct the first two episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and he also serves as an executive producer on the project. The Apple TV+ series was created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction.

Godzilla Returns in New Apple TV+ Series
Warner Bros.
Army officer Lee Shaw (Wyatt and Kurt Russell) will have to contend with Godzilla in the upcoming Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. While its unclear just how many of the Titans like King Kong, Mothra and King Ghidorah will show up in the show, Legacy of Monsters follows the events of Godzilla and Kong’s showdown with Mechagodzilla in 2021.
The official synopsis for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters reads:
“Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch.
Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.”
Godzilla made his big-screen debut nearly 70 years ago in Toho’s Gojira (1954). In 1956, the film was reworked, and new scenes featuring Raymond Burr as journalist Steve Martin, were added for American audiences’ first introduction to the titan in 1956’s Godzilla, King of the Monsters! While Godzilla has been portrayed as both savior and villain over the decades, it’s likely he’ll remain more heroic, since that’s the attitude the Titan has taken so far in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse.
A release date for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is still TBD.
