Legacy Villain Rumors As Fans Speculate About DC Universe Reboot

Dec 11, 2023

Summary

James Gunn emphasizes that the focus is on Superman: Legacy, leaving the future villains a mystery. Gunn denies any connections between his new phone and Brainiac’s appearance in the DC movies. Fans’ speculation about Brainiac’s involvement in Legacy is debunked by Gunn himself.

James Gunn sheds some light on the Superman: Legacy villain situation as the DC Universe reboot is getting ready to happen next year. In a few months, Superman: Legacy, starring David Corenswet, will finally start principal photography as Gunn’s upcoming movie will be the first pivotal film for Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters.” With the amount of secrecy surrounding Superman: Legacy, the world is patiently waiting for more announcements to emerge before filming begins in March 2024.

As the Superman: Legacy cast has been shaping up, following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, audiences are still wondering who will be the actual main antagonist in the movie. Some fans have attempted to find out the answers to their queries by asking James Gunn himself, with two recently getting interesting responses from the DCU co-CEO.

When asked by @KennySparks90 on Threads if they will see “Brainiac, Metallo, Cyborg Superman or Mr. Mxyzptlk in future Superman movies,” Gunn stated that “who knows what the future will bring – right now all I care about is Legacy.”

On Bluesky, when Gunn had recently shared that he had a new phone, @ejrfoto asked if “this is code for Brainiac being in the DC movies,” which the Superman: Legacy director quickly followed up with “most notably not,” as he also stressed that “although everyone seems to think everything is code for Brainiac in Legacy these days!”

Who Would Be The Best Main Villain For Superman: Legacy?

While Nicholas Hoult is being eyed to play Lex Luthor, his deal isn’t signed yet, and it’s unclear if he is actually going to be the primary antagonist in Superman: Legacy. If Lex is only a secondary threat in the DC Universe movie, it begs the question of who would actually be a good villain to go with in Superman: Legacy. With Superman: Legacy looking to add something new to the Man of Steel’s media history, this would be the proper time to feature one of the more unused Superman villains who have yet to be featured on the big screen.

Even though Gunn may be playing coy about him, Brainiac would actually be the perfect first enemy for Corenswet’s Superman. One of the things that worked well with Man of Steel was having General Zod and his Kryptonian army invade Earth, setting up a massive threat from the get-go for Clark. If Superman: Legacy goes in a similar approach with Brainiac as the collector of worlds, it would allow the DC Universe to get a major start for the new franchise, and set up DCU’s galactic landscape alongside setting up its version of Earth.

Krypton is a perfect example of how a creative team can take full advantage of Brainiac in live-action, both from his visual look to his powerful presence in the DC Universe. Though Brainiac has gotten his time to shine on television, the movies have neglected him for far too long, and Superman: Legacy could finally rectify that. Hopefully, as 2023 gets ready to end, more Superman: Legacy news will emerge, including who is the actual villain.
