Nowadays, major film festivals aren’t just showcases of the best in cinema. Many of them offer strong selections of TV series, as the small screen features some of the very best filmmakers and A-list stars from around the world. And at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the event’s Primetime Programme is full of some of the most anticipated TV series from around the world.

The series chosen for the Primetime Programme are picked because they are “compelling series from Canada and around the world.” This year, there are several standouts in the lineup, including the long-awaited Prime Video series, “Expats,” which is from filmmaker Lulu Wang. This is Wang’s first major project since her breakout hit, “The Farewell.” We are also getting the world premiere of the Netflix series, “All the Light We Cannot See,” which stars Mark Ruffalo and comes from filmmaker Shawn Levy and writer Steven Knight.

“This year’s Primetime programme is bigger than ever and gives audiences the exclusive and unmatched opportunity to celebrate the best new international series together, in cinema, on the big screen,” said Anita Lee, TIFF Chief Programming Officer. “TIFF audiences will be the first to see the Prime Video series ‘Expats’ — Lulu Wang’s highly anticipated follow-up to ‘The Farewell,’ starring Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, and Ji-young Yoo, a Pulitzer Prize–winning adaptation from Shawn Levy and Steven Knight, a high-octane Korean thriller, a brand new vision from the creator of ‘Euphoria,’ an atypical love story between Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Riseborough, a contemporary Scandinavian tragedy, and three powerful Canadian series, all spotlighting underrepresented voices from an exciting new wave of storytellers.”
