Marvel Reveal the Surprising Strategy Used to Protect Deadpool & Wolverine Secrets

Jul 28, 2024

In order to protect the surprises in the imminent Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel Studios purposely faked reports of cameos in the film, to keep internet detectives guessing. In an interview with GamesRadar+, executive producer Wendy Jacobson confirmed the lengths producers went through to stop spoilers from leaking. The film’s real attraction is the first MCU onscreen pairing (not counting X-Men: Origins) of Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), but the rumored cameos get much of the attention on social media. In response, Marvel employed some cunning chicanery.

Everyone claims to hate online spoilers, and for this film, the spoilers could ruin the viewing experience beforehand. To this end, Jacobsen revealed that Marvel’s misinformation campaign didn’t just include some planted stories online. She said some duplicity was employed on the set as well. Meaning we may all have been fooled.

“There may or may not have been some subterfuge and misdirections on the internet or in-person in order to protect the secrecy,” she said.

Deadpool & Wolverine 3.5/5 A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.Release Date July 26, 2024 Franchise Marvel Expand

One of the fake rumors that may have been planted by Marvel centered on the appearance of Lady Deadpool in the film, and the rumor that Taylor Swift would play the character. This particular rumor quickly spread like wildfire online, and the casting seemed to many to be a little too obvious. The rumor has since been disproven (via Deadline), but Marvel has yet to fess up if they planted it. While cameos often come off as cheap fan service in many other franchises, Jacobsen said that wasn’t the case with Deadpool & Wolverine.

“I can neither confirm nor deny any cameos in this film, but I will say, in terms of characters that may or may not appear, it was always important to us that nothing in this movie feels like a gimmick. Anyone showing up has a crucial story purpose or a beginning, middle and end as a character arc. It was definitely a collaborative process of seeing who fit in and who didn’t.”

Who Do We Think Is in Deadpool & Wolverine?

Besides Jackman and Reynolds, trailers have confirmed that the returning cast includes Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, and Stefan Kapičić. They will be joined by Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova and Matthew Macfayden as Mr. Paradox. There is even an appearance by Peggy, known as “Britain’s Ugliest Dog,” playing Dogpool. Trailers, however, have revealed some cameos, including Lady Deathstrike (Kelly Hu), Azazel (Jason Flemyng), Pyro (Aaron Stanford), Sabretooth (Tyler Mane), and X-23/Laura (Dafne Keen).

Even with the confirmation of some cameos, Reynolds insists there are many more surprises in the film. “The honest truth is, we’re hiding a lot,” he said. Cameo spoilers are already leaking online, however, as advance screenings take place, so fans should shy away from social media, particularly X/Twitter, if they don’t want their viewing experience ruined.
