Max Reveals Action-Packed Trailer for J.J. Abrams’ Original Series ‘Duster’

Mar 20, 2025

Get those engines running action fans, because we now have our first look at Duster, the new Max original series created by J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan that stars beloved Lost actor Josh Holloway. Set in 1972, the crime thriller centers around the first black female FBI agent as she teams up with a getaway driver to take down a major crime syndicate operating in the Southwest.
The new teaser trailer for Duster was released today (seen below), and showcases all the action and drama we can expect from Abrams’ new creation, which definitely seems more R-rated than some of his previous offerings. We catch a glimpse of the first meeting between Holloway’s character Jim and FBI agent Nina (Rachel Hilson) before things get wild. Sex, drugs, and action are all front and center in the new series, as is Holloway’s trademark charm.

From the epic fantasy series Game of Thrones to the revolutionary teen drama Euphoria, HBO series represent some of the best on TV.

Holloway is no stranger to the action genre, as after starring as the fan-favorite character of Sawyer in Lost, he went on to appear in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in 2011, as well as the 2013 film Paranoia, and 2014’s Sabotage alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. Meanwhile, Hilson has appeared prominently in a number of TV roles, including in shows like American Horror Story: Double Feature, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, and the Hulu original teen drama Love, Victor.
J.J. Abrams Calls ‘Duster’ a “Crazy Story”

With nods to various 70s crime films like the 1978 Ryan O’Neal movie The Driver, Duster is clearly hoping to capitalize on nostalgia with its retro setting and music, as HBO shows like The Deuce, Vinyl, and Minx have done in the past. Abrams recently told The Hollywood Reporter that his goal is to tell a “crazy story,” and that the whole series stemmed from a single image in his head:

“I had this image of a phone in the middle of the desert and a car driving up, and a guy getting on the phone to find out where he was meant to go next. It implied some kind of crazy intrigue, and I didn’t know what the answer was, but I knew it was compelling.”

“LaToya and I started talking about who this guy might be,” he continued. “I always knew there would be an FBI agent who showed up. But it wasn’t until we started talking about what her story is, that we started building this story towards something that felt twisty and turn-y and ultimately really satisfying.”
Duster is just the first of many projects Abrams has in play with Max and Warner Bros., as back in 2019 he signed a five-year agreement with them worth $500 million dollars. In addition to Holloway and Hilson, the show also stars the incomparable Keith David, Sydney Elisabeth, Corbin Bernsen, Greg Grunberg, Camille Guaty, and Asivak Koostachin.

The eight-episode series debuts on Thursday, May 15 at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT on Max, with episodes airing weekly until its conclusion on July 3, 2025.
