Melissa Barrera is Fan-Favorite Casting Choice for James Gunn’s DCU Wonder Woman

Jun 15, 2025

James Gunn’s revelation that a Wonder Woman movie is now in development, alongside the already-announced Paradise Lost TV series centered on the Amazonian, has sent fans into overdrive with their casting suggestions – with one name coming out as a strong leader even though everyone is convinced the controversy surrounding the star would make it an impossible casting choice. When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the helm of DC Studios, there were immediate questions over who would be taking over some of the iconic superhero roles that were previously played by Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot, among others. Initially, it seemed that Gadot could possibly be appearing as Wonder Woman in the DCU, with the actress suggesting this to be so. Over time, though, it has become apparent that Gunn will mostly be cleaning the slate of the old DCEU and that means a new Wonder Woman will rise.
Now, with a movie in the works, fans have made their voices heard loud and clear on social media, with Star Wars: Andor’s Adria Arjora and Moon Knight’s May Calamawy being two recurring choices. However, one name that has appeared in more posts than others is former Scream star Melissa Barrera, who many have said would the perfect choice to take over the role of Diana Prince in the DCU.
Melissa Barrera Would Be a Controversial Wonder Woman Casting Choice for Some

We are naturally quite a way off finding out who James Gunn’s team would choose to step into the costume of Wonder Woman, so that gives fans plenty more time to argue the for and against points for the many actresses’ names that have come into the mix. However, while Barrera is one of the popular fan-casting choices, whether Warner Bros. would allow her to be cast in the film would be an entirely different matter. Barrera was the face of the Scream franchise when it returned to screens in 2021, and returned for the sequel. However, following a series of social media posts addressing her personal feelings about the Israel-Gaza war, Barrera was fired from appearing in the upcoming Scream VII. While many were on Barrera’s side – and the fallout resulted in a complete retooling of the new Scream movie – the casting of the actress in the role of Wonder Woman is one that would take someone to step up to a very small plate and prepare to bat for their lives against the push back it would get.
However, the choice is still up in the air and potentially several years away based on the meandering and slow progress of the first DCU movies. By the time casting comes around, the controversy surrounding Barrera may have fallen into obscurity, but there are also many other actresses that some would like to see wield the Lasso of Truth, such as Jessica Green, Frida Gustavsson, Katie O’Brian, and Eiza Gonzalez. That is quite a hefty selection to take a pick from, and it’s only the tip of the iceberg. Source: X
