Michael Fassbender’s Hit American James Bond Action Thriller Suffers Season 3 Setback
Oct 10, 2026
Michael Fassbender has built an eclectic and versatile filmography throughout his career. He’s earned Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for 12 Years a Slave and Best Actor for his portrayal of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, while also proving himself a formidable presence in blockbuster action movies and TV shows. Most notably, Fassbender played the young Erik Lehnsherr, better known as Magneto, in X-Men: First Class and its sequels. More recently, he has taken on the lead role in The Agency on Showtime and Paramount+, with the espionage thriller quickly becoming a hit. Following its Season 1 debut, The Agency became Showtime’s most-streamed new series ever, reaching 5.1 million global cross-platform viewers. With the series proving to be such a major success for Showtime, viewers may be disappointed to learn that they’ll have to wait a little longer for Fassbender’s next mission.
The Agency premiered in late November 2024 and was an instant success. Though following the increasingly common pattern of long gaps between streaming releases, its second season didn’t premiere until June 2026. After audiences already had to wait nearly two years between seasons, this latest news may not go over well with fans of the spy series. While Season 3 has yet to receive an official renewal from Paramount+, the series was reportedly slated to return due to its strong viewership. The Ankler reported on the series’ future while examining Paramount+’s programming strategy amid the company’s recent merger and how executives may approach the streaming service’s upcoming slate. However, Season 2 received far less fanfare than its predecessor, with little marketing surrounding its release.
All of this to say, Season 3 of The Agency is truly up in the air. However, Dominic West, who plays the Director of the CIA in the series, recently offered fans a glimmer of hope in an interview with The Playlist. While West couldn’t confirm the show’s future, he suggested that there may simply be a delay rather than an outright cancellation. Regarding the possibility of Season 3, West said:
“I don’t know. I was talking to someone about it last night, and I think there was some delay about it for some reason. But hopefully there will, yeah. I think we need to see more of the new head of the CIA.”
The Agency isn’t alone in the sea of shows whose fate is left among executives to figure out in the midst of the recent merger. Skydance, as it will now go by, officially completed its merger (and takeover) of Warner Bros. Discovery on Oct. 6. Cindy Holland, Paramount’s streaming chief, has left the merged company, leaving HBO veteran Casey Bloys to lead streaming for both HBO Max and Paramount.
The Agency is an English-language adaptation of the French series Le Bureau des Légendes and follows Martian (Fassbender), a secret agent working deep undercover who is suddenly ordered to return to London and report to his superiors. When the woman he romanced while undercover, Sami Zahir (Jodie Turner-Smith), unexpectedly finds him in London, the carefully separated worlds of Martian’s personal and professional lives begin to collide.
The series also stars Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere, Katherine Waterston, Harriet Sansom Harris, John Magaro, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Andrew Brooke, India Fowler, Reza Brojerdi, and Alex Reznik. For now, it seems like the fate of The Agency is in Bloys’ hands. But if you’re looking to watch or rewatch the first two seasons while waiting for an update, The Agency is available to stream on Paramount+.
