Mike Colter Hasn’t Talked To Marvel About More Luke Cage & Says The Character is “In The Rearview Mirror”

Jan 9, 2023

With Charlie Cox delighting fans with his reintroduction as Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, folks are dying to see what happens in the forthcoming series, “Daredevil: Born Again.” And while everyone is hyped about ‘Born Again’ and how it might integrate the character further into the MCU, fans are wondering if more of Cox’s Netflix/Marvel brethren will be joining the cause. Well, as of now, it appears Mike Colter and his Luke Cage character won’t be making the leap to the MCU.

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Mike Colter was asked about the future of his character, Luke Cage. For those who don’t know, Colter portrayed Cage in the character’s solo series, “Luke Cage,” as well as in “The Defenders,” both of which were part of Netflix’s array of Marvel TV series. There have been rumors that other Netflix refugees from those shows, which also included “Daredevil,” starring Charlie Cox, “Jessica Jones,” starring Krysten Ritter, “The Punisher,” starring Jon Bernthal, and “Iron Fist,” starring… well, let’s not talk about that one. However, nothing has been confirmed, and according to Colter, he hasn’t gotten the call yet. And even if he did, Colter isn’t sure he would want to return.

“I just try to stay in reasonable shape just because, but I don’t think about Luke Cage opportunities,” Colter said. “It’s one of those things where it’s in the rearview mirror at this point. If somehow I get a call, my dance card is kind of full. But if I get a call, something happens, great. I had a good time. I’m happy, more than happy, to let someone else take on that mantle or that role. That character’s living on for a long time. Fans are going to have that character in one way, shape, or form for the rest of their lives, and I’m happy to have been a part of that for those guys.”
Colter does mention the possibility of a recasting situation. So far, Marvel has yet to really do that with any of the Netflix characters. Some of the actors from those shows have shown up in other Marvel projects, including Mahershala Ali, who appeared in “Luke Cage” and is set to star in “Blade,” but with the reintroduction of Cox, fans are hoping that the rest of the Netflix people will get second chances.
The rumor mill seems to be heating up as “Daredevil: Born Again” is gearing up to start production. Fans noticed that Ritter recently posted on Instagram where she was wearing a Daredevil t-shirt. Many are taking that as a sign that she is in the process of readying herself for ‘Born Again.’ There are also persistent rumors that Bernthal could revive his Punisher character, and someone from “Iron Fist,” such as Jessica Henwick (a fan-favorite and rising star) could return, as well.
Regardless, as of now, the only confirmed return is Charlie Cox as Daredevil. And we all know Marvel Studios loves to keep its secrets. So even if we do see many of those people jumping over into the MCU, we likely won’t find out anytime soon.
“Daredevil: Born Again” is expected to arrive on Disney+ in 2024.
