’NCIS’ Most Popular Characters are Back After More than 10 Years and Killing It With Its First Rotten Tomatoes Reactions

Sep 2, 2025

The long-promised reunion of Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo in NCIS: Tony & Ziva is almost here, and critics have been sharing their thoughts on whether this belated return to the NCIS family is arrestingly good or criminally bad. It turns out, it is probably even better than many could have hoped for – as long as you don’t mind a hefty dose of fan service in with the bargain. For NCIS fans, the departures of Ziva David and Tony DiNozzo from the flagship show in Season 11 and Season 13, respectively, signaled a big change in the series, one that they have never quite recovered from after almost a decade. For that reason, the announcement that the pair would not only be reprising their roles, but would be doing so in their own spinoff series would answer many questions that have been bugging fans of “Tiva” for a long time. While there have only been three reviews so far, they are unanimous in their praise for the return of two much-loved characters. Collider’s Jasneet Singh calls it “the perfect way to tell Tony and Ziva’s story” and while the switch up in setting may be a “shock to the system,” it is “promising.” Meanwhile, Lissete Lanuza Sáenz of Fangirlish says, “If you felt like NCIS stopped being your NCIS after Tony and Ziva left, then this is 100% the show for you.” Awards Buzz’s Abe Friedtanzer added:
“This show succeeds wondrously in resurrecting two fan favorite characters and giving them a new playground, a surefire way to reel in those who already know and love Tony and Ziva and to hook a brand-new audience.”

‘NCIS: Tony and Ziva’ Could Be the Injection the Franchise Needs

NCIS: Tony & Ziva launches on Paramount+ with the first three episodes dropping September 4, before rolling out weekly. The story skips back to focus on Tony and Ziva as they go on the run across Europe, co-parenting while attempting to stay one step ahead of those pursuing them. It has already been revealed that the pair will not be romantically linked at the beginning of the series, but there will be plenty of missed moments between them as they rely upon each other as they trot across the continent, trying to work out who is after them. Although it is unfair to say that the NCIS franchise is struggling – as the flagship series is still going strong and rarely out of the Paramount+ streaming chart – recently fans have been disappointed by the cancellation of several spinoffs. However, there always seems to be something new coming to the world of NCIS, and Tony & Ziva’s arrival could be one of the show’s most successful spinoffs. The trailer broke Paramount records, and if the series achieves its potential, then there could be plenty more seasons to come.
