Netflix’s ‘Extraction’ Spin-off Adds ‘Logan’ Star Boyd Holbrook
Aug 17, 2025
One of Netflix’s most successful action franchises in recent memory is the Extraction film series, which is currently two films strong with a third on the way, as confirmed at the Netflix TUDUM event following the release of Extraction 2 in June 2023. Both movies star Chris Hemsworth, with Extraction 2 becoming one of Netflix’s most-watched original movies at the time of its release. Now, the Extraction universe is expanding with a spin-off series that has been in development for several months, and a new actor has been announced to join the cast, signaling that the show is moving closer to production. According to Variety, actor Boyd Holbrook will join the cast of the Extraction television series, which was first announced in February, with Omar Sy in the lead role. The series will be set in the same world as the films, and currently has an eight-episode order from Netflix. No details about Holbrook’s role were revealed, though Deadline’s report on the casting states that the actor will be playing Extraction team leader David Ibarra, a series regular role. Glen Mazzara, known for his work on The Walking Dead, will be serving as showrunner for the series. The synopsis for the Extraction television series reads as follows: “A mercenary (Sy) embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, he must navigate life-or-death choices while confronting deep emotional wounds. The series explores the trauma, betrayal, and moral conflicts of characters pushed to the edge.” It seems that the series won’t stray too far from the scenarios and themes of the first two films. Whether Holbrook’s character will ultimately end up being friend or foe remains to be seen.
A stll of Boyd Holbrook starring as Donald Pierce in Logan
20th Century Fox
Boyd Holbrook has had an interesting career as of late, with the actor being well-known for his frequent collaborations with Director James Mangold, who has put Holbrook in several of his films. The most recent example is A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan Biopic starring Timothee Chalamet, in which Holbrook played legendary singer and songwriter Johnny Cash. The actor also played one of the villains in Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Holbrook also played the villain in Mangold’s seminal comic book film Logan, released in 2017. Given Holbrook’s extensive career, playing both heroes and villains (having starred in the Netflix series Narcos as a DEA agent), it’s hard to tell what kind of role the actor will play in the Extraction series. Thankfully, Holbrook is no stranger to action roles, and his return to Netflix after Narcos and The Sandman could hopefully mean that his extensive role in the series could be a compelling one. Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and Chris Castaldi will all serve as executive producers of the Extraction series under the AGBO production banner, the same company that produced the first two Extraction films. It will be interesting to see who else is cast to round out the series, although there is no official release date for the streaming series or the previously announced third film.
