New ‘Dan Da Dan’ Movie ‘Evil Eye’ Debuts With Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score
Jun 11, 2025
In less than a month, Dan Da Dan returns with another extraordinary season, half a year after impressing fans with its massive Season 1 finale, “Let’s Go to the Cursed House.” While fans eagerly await the new chapter, another Dan Da Dan production that everyone can’t stop talking about, appears to be doing as good as the original anime series. It’s none other than Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye! The film landed in North America on Friday, June 6, and most recently, it has earned a laudable feat on Rotten Tomatoes, finding favor among the audience soon after its release. Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye currently boasts a 97% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is slightly higher than Dan Da Dan’s 93% but a few numbers away from the original series’ 100% critics’ score. It should, however, be noted that, as of this writing, the anime film’s critics’ rating is unavailable on the review aggregator website. Still, a couple of reviews from its Tomatometer Critics commend the movie, including Collider’s Elisa Guimarães, who penned:
“Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye is sure to captivate fans of the anime with a fascinating story that is just as spooky and as funny as we have come to expect from Dan Da Dan.”
Directed by Fūga Yamashiro and Abel Góngora, Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye was written by Hiroshi Seko as a compilation of a recap of Dan Da Dan Season 1, the first three episodes of Season 2, and an interview with Yamashiro and Góngora. It debuted on May 30, 2025, in Asia, before finding its way to the U.S. on June 6 and Europe on June 7. Starring in the noteworthy film are Shion Wakayama as Momo (Abby Trott in the English version), Natsuki Hanae as Okarun (A.J. Beckles), and Kaito Ishikawa as Jiji (Aleks Le).
‘Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye’s Co-director Talks Jiji’s “Challenging” Transformation
As an adaptation of the Evil Eye arc of the manga series, the Dan Da Dan film revealed a hidden, cursed room within Jiji’s home where he had Momo and Okarun investigate the supposed curse hanging over the house. The room turned out to be the underground domain of the ancient god, Tsuchinoko. Unfortunately, Jiji becomes possessed by the titular vengeful entity, causing him to undergo a chilling transformation. Speaking with Collider’s Laura Adams about that moment, co-director Gongora described the transformation as his favorite, adding:
“We wanted to try new things and make it cool, but because it’s a little bit artistic, it could have been a disaster. So we needed to be careful. I think it turned out looking cool, and we achieved what we wanted, so I’m pretty happy with it. But yeah, it was really challenging.”
Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye is playing in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more details about Dan Da Dan Season 2, which premieres next month.
