The latest synopsis for the upcoming MCU sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, spells bad news for Rocket. Marvel has now unveiled a more detailed logline for the movie, which reveals that Star-Lord and the rest of the gang must rally around Rocket in order to save his life. “In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life-a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will see the return of the core cast, many of whom will portray their respective Marvel superhero for the final time. Thus, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars an ensemble cast that features Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Debicki, Sylvester Stallone, Maria Bakalova, as well as introducing Peacemaker star Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary and The Maze Runner star Will Poulter as Adam Warlock.

James Gunn Knew He Had to Tell Rocket’s Story

Director James Gunn, who has helmed all three installments in the Guardians of the Galaxy, has known for some time that the third outing would center on Rocket Raccoon. “I’ll just say Rocket is a big part of what’s happening in the future – and a lot of this stuff (like the scars we’re about to see on his back) sets up what I’ve been planning for Rocket all along,” Gunn said back on 2020.
Feeling that he owed it to the character to come back for one, final installment, Gunn revealed in December last year that, to him, Rocket has always been the “secret protagonist” of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. “One of the reasons why I came back to [make] this movie was because I felt like I needed to tell Rocket’s story. I would’ve been very sad not to complete the trilogy for many reasons, but I just feel very connected to Rocket,” he explained. “I feel like nobody would be able to tell his full story if it wasn’t me. To me, Rocket has always been the secret protagonist of the Guardians movies. From the beginning, it has been rooted in who he is as a character. I think he exemplifies a lot of the traits of all the Guardians. They’ve had all these traumas, and it brings them together. I just think that his is more extreme than others.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2023, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
