New Stephen King Remake Lands Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Score Ahead of Streaming Debut

Oct 2, 2026

Stephen King has proven himself to be a powerhouse in the storytelling space. The decorated author has published more than 60 novels throughout his career, and a huge number of them have been adapted into television shows, films, and even plays. He’s known as the “King of Horror” for a reason, and it all started with his ultra-popular debut novel. King’s first novel has already been adapted several times, but it seems audiences still haven’t had enough of Carrie. The 1974 classic follows Carrie White, a bullied and religiously abused teenager who discovers latent telekinetic powers. The story was first adapted in the 1976 film Carrie, an enduringly popular release starring Sissy Spacek in the titular role. It went on to spawn a 1999 sequel, titled The Rage: Carrie 2, in a far less successful attempt to channel King’s notorious blend of horror and intrigue. A 2002 television film and 2013 remake were likewise considered a step-down from the original, but the Carrie franchise is looking to inject fresh energy into the story with a Prime Video series.

The upcoming miniseries, fittingly titled Carrie, follows a new Carrie White, this time played by Summer H. Howell, as she navigates the challenges of high school following the death of her father. It’s developed by Mike Flanagan, the popular filmmaker known for horror hits like Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House. King is also attached to the project as executive producer. Carrie is poised to debut in just a few days, on Oct. 7, and early Rotten Tomatoes reviews are heaping praise on the incoming horror hit. It’s got a solid 85% Tomatometer score, and most critics praise the series for its ability to bring “King’s tale into the 21st century,” and emphasize “the value of being kind in an unkind world.” The few negative reviews point to “an ambitious but uneven reinvention” of the King classic, but the overall consensus remains positive. The episodic nature of the series also gets frequent praise, with reviewers noting that it allows for a deeper examination of character arcs and emotions across its extended runtime. Lauded as “perhaps the most brutal retelling of the story yet, for a particularly brutal time,” it seems the modern take on Carrie might come at the perfect time.

Summer H Howell As Carrie Standing Alone In A Crowded Room In Carrie 2026

All eight episodes of Prime Video’s Carrie will hit television screens on Oct. 7, providing viewers with the opportunity to binge the series in full. Those shining reviews indicate the series is yet another stellar King adaptation, this time with plenty of space to let the story breathe.
