‘Oppenheimer’ And ‘Barry’ Top 2024 ASC Awards

Mar 12, 2024

Over a long awards season, nothing becomes more anticipated than a guild honors ceremony where an upset or two may occur. Before the envelopes were even opened, the 2024 ASC Awards were destined for “surprising” winners off the nominees alone. Oh, except for “Oppenheimer.” Yes, Hoyte van Hoytema won the Theatrical Feature Film category on his third nomination. The upsets? That was almost everything else.

Were you thinking “The Bear,” which has won basically every award possible for the past four months, would take the Half-Hour Series Award? Nope, it went to Carl Herse for an episode of “Barry” instead. “Succession” or “The Last of Us” or One-Hour Series? Wait, they weren’t even recognized. Instead, M. David Mullen took it for an episode from the final season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” You probably would assume “Beef” might take the Limited Or Anthology or Motion Picture for Television Award, right? Wrong, not even nominated. Instead, Ben Kutchins‘ work on the already forgotten Hulu original movie “Boston Strangler” took the honor.
In other categories, Warwick Thornton won the Spotlight Award for “The New Boy” and Jon Joffin took the Music Video honor for “At Home” (performed by Jon Bryant).
The evening also saw Spike Lee the recipient of the Board of Governors Award, Don Burgess won the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Steve Fierberg earned a Career Achievement honor.
