Awards Season finally has some twists and turns to contend with before the Oscar nominations are revealed on Tuesday. Today, the 2024 BATA Awards nominations were revealed and snubs and surprises were almost everywhere. The big news, however, was that Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” led all films with 13 nominations followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 11.

Those two films were joined in the five-nominee Best Film category by Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Justin Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” and, in a surprise, Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers.”
Overall, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Zone of Interest” each scored nine nominations, but the former saw both Scorsese and Lily Gladstone snubbed in Best Director and Lead Actress. The latter didn’t make the Best Film cut although it earned Outstanding British Film, Best Director and Supporting Actress nomination for Sandra Huller. The German actresses did double duty making the Lead Actress category for “Anatomy of a Fall” which also saw Triet land Original Screenplay and Director fields.
Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” earned six nominations but saw star Andrew Scott inexplicably snubbed for Lead Actor. Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” earned five nominations including recognition for stars Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elrodi, and Rosamund Pike. “Barbie” took just five noms and saw Gerwig snubbed in both the Best Film and Director categories.
It’s important to qualify that to increase diversity, the BAFTA Awards are partially chosen by popular vote and by committee. In six category fields, three nominees are determined by popular vote and the other three by the committee.
The 77th BAFTA Awards will be handed out on February 18 in London.
