Outer Banks Renewed for Season 5, Which Will Be The Final Season

Nov 7, 2024

Fans of the action-adventure series Outer Banks have been greeted with some good and bad news ahead of Part 2 of the series’ fourth season. The good news is that the show has been renewed for a fifth season, but the bad news for all the Pogues out there is that Season 5 will be its last.

Per an announcement via Netflix, the co-creators and executive producers of Outer Banks, Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke, revealed the news in a “Dispatch to all Pogues,” a reference to what John B (Chase Stokes) and his friends call themselves on the series to identify them as residents of the “Cut,” where they reveal that they always had a five-season plan for the show and after seeing a photo in 2017 of teenagers on a beach during a power outage that helped them come up with the idea for the global phenomenon. The creators said, “From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would leave to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship.” Even though they didn’t believe that they would be able to tell their five-season story when the show started, they’re happy they’ll be able to fulfill that goal.

“With a little sadness, but also excitement, we’re putting Season Four behind us, and are turning to Season Five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago. Season Five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet.”

The creators of the series have a lot of love for the fans and are very transparent about the show coming to an end and about Season 4, which will be wrapping up when Part 2 debuts on Nov. 7. They promised “a feature-length” finale for Season 4 but admitted that the season as a whole has been their “longest and hardest” to date. You can check out the Season 5 announcement below, which is affectionately signed off with “P4L”, otherwise known as Pogues for Life.

Outer Banks Has Been a True Global Phenomenon

Outer Banks is set in the coastal community of its namesake in North Carolina, where there is a class divide between the working-class locals and the wealthy seasonal residents that are known as “Pogues” and “Kooks.” The central focus of the series is a group of Pogue young adults residing in The Cut who have tasked themselves with solving the mystery of what happened to the missing father of John B., the group’s leader. As they go on their journey, they discover a treasure that is connected to John B.’s father, but they are confronted by obstacles along the way that add to the drama of the highly addictive series. The show features an ensemble cast that includes, Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Austin North, Charles Esten, Drew Starkey, Carlacia Grant and Fiona Palomo.

Outer Banks premiered in April 2020, right as the COVID-19 pandemic was starting, and it contributed to the series becoming appointment television. With each season, the show has proven to be a hit on a global scale, spending 27 weeks on the global top 10 English TV list, with Part 1 of Season 4 debuting at number one and delivering a perfect 100% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes – a vast improvement on Season 3’s lowly 56%.

The show has really tapped into its nature as a viral hit, making stars out of its cast and making many of its moments must-see on social media, particularly TikTok, where the show has proven to be very popular. Netflix is now throwing a live music event for fans of the series called Poguelandia, with the second edition being held in Santa Monica over the weekend. The cast also embarked on a “Pogue Tour” that took them all over the United States and even Canada and Brazil. Outer Banks is truly cross-promotion at its finest.
