‘Peaky Blinders’ Creator Steven Knight Developing Spinoff Series
Dec 19, 2024
Cillian Murphy’s time in Peaky Blinders might be coming to a close with the upcoming movie, but the franchise will reportedly live on in a brand-new spin-off show. Creator Steven Knight introduced audiences to Tommy Shelby back in 2013. Set just after the first World War, Peaky Blinders saw Tommy return to Birmingham to lead the titular gang, along with his brother Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson), and Aunt Polly Gray (Helen McCrory). The hit series came to an end in 2022 after Season 6, and Knight is bringing Shelby’s story to a close with the upcoming Netflix film. But the Peaky Blinders conquest won’t stop there, as Knight has unveiled plans for the franchise to live on beyond Tommy Shelby.
Speaking to French outlet Paris Match, Steven Knight teased how the Peaky Blinders universe could extend beyond the upcoming film. As well as writing and directing the movie, Knight has also written a stage play adaptation of the show, which begins its run in March. But Knight isn’t stopping there, as the franchise creator has teased a brand-new spin-off that no one was expecting. Steven Knight said:
“We’re going to focus on the new generation through a series whose events will resume after World War II.”
The Peaky Blinders movie will take place during the second World War. Plot details are still a tightly held secret, although many members of the Peaky Blinders gang are expected to be drafted to the front line. The emotional fallout of WWI was a major theme in the original show, as both Tommy and his brother Arthur fought in Europe. Could Tommy Shelby get drafted again to fight the Nazis? And how will his PTSD handle it?
The ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie Has Wrapped Production
As well as unveiling a new Peaky Blinders spin-off show, Steven Knight also revealed that the upcoming film has finished shooting. Alongside Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy and Stephen Graham are set to reprise their roles from the original series. Joining them for the film is Barry Keoghan. The Irish actor’s new character hasn’t been fully unveiled yet, but fans have gotten their first look at Keoghan in costume thanks to an official still released by Netflix. The cast will also be joined by a bona-fide A-lister in Tim Roth, best known for starring in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. Dune’s Rebecca Ferguson will also appear in the film. None of the new characters have been unveiled yet.
