Pedro Pascal Reflects on Working with Sarah Michelle Gellar on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Mar 14, 2023

Recently, Pedro Pascal has recalled working on the hit television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where he was credited as Pedro Balmaceda. Sarah Michelle Gellar starred as the title character, a chosen one who was supposed to “stand alone against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness” but instead chose to work with friends. Pascal had a brief but pivotal role in the season four premiere, titled “The Freshmen,” which marked a shift in the show’s status quo.

After an explosive high school graduation ceremony at the end of season 3, the start of the show’s fourth year saw Buffy moving to UC Sunnydale and having an absolutely miserable time at college. However, one bright spot is meeting Pascal’s character. He plays Eddie, an Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham fan. Unfortunately, Eddie was bitten and drained of his blood shortly afterward by a group of vampires led by Sunday (Katherine Towne).

The modus operandi of the vampire gang is to feed on first-year students, clean out their room, and leave behind a note making it seem like the student dropped out because the pressure got too much for them. Except in Eddie’s case, they forgot to bring along Of Human Bondage, his self-professed security blanket, which clued Buffy in on how something sinister was going on. Something that Eddie himself would confirm after he was sired as a vampire as well.

Reflecting On The Show Years Later

Three days ago, Gellar posted a throwback photo of Buffy and Eddie in the episode with the caption “When #Mother met #Father.” Pascal was asked about the post during the red carpet premiere of The Mandalorian season 3 premiere by Entertainment Tonight. Specifically, he was asked about what he remembers about being on the show all those years ago.

“Everything. Absolutely everything. I remember she had ice cream in her trailer, and she gave me some. She went back to her trailer, she got me some ice cream and she shared – ’cause it was a night shoot, it was in the middle of the night, and we were on the UCLA campus. They hadn’t built their college sets yet. I was doing a play in Long Beach, and I had to miss opening night because we had to shoot this very, very short moment. I remember everything. I could go on, and on and on. I could give you step-by-step, every detail. I had to have lunch in the vamp mask, and vamp face. And she was incredibly kind. She taught me how to use a sandbag to hit my mark. She was the best.”

Right now, you can watch “The Freshmen” and the entirety of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series on Hulu. Regarding more recent tv, you can see Pascal in The Mandalorian on Disney+ and The Last of Us on HBO. Gellar, meanwhile, is starring in Wolf Pack, which is airing on Paramount+.
