‘Percy Jackson’ Star Adam Copeland Says Season 2 Will Be Darker, More Mature
Jan 2, 2025
Percy Jackson and the Olympians may have been an outstanding fantasy series, seamlessly blending teen camaraderie with Greek mythology, but one of its stars teases that the second season will delve into darker and more mature themes. Released in 2023 as a ten-episode series, it follows young Percy Jackson as he goes on a perilous quest to find Zeus’ master bolt and prevent a looming war among the gods.
Season 1 of the fantasy series adapts Rick Riordan’s first book, The Lightning Thief. With Season 2 on the horizon, it will bring The Sea of Monsters (second book) to life, as Percy and his friends embark on another treacherous journey to retrieve the Golden Fleece in order to protect Camp Half-Blood.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Adam “Edge” Copeland, who plays God of War Ares in the series, discussed how the tale of Percy Jackson and the Olympians has evolved since its debut. He also explained how the show will take on a more mature tone beginning with season two. The actor also reflected on his experiences with the franchise and where it might go from here. He stated:
“I felt so honored to be a part of the world and the Percy Jackson world and to be brought into it. I realize that actors wait their entire careers to get on a show like this and some never do. I don’t look past it at all, and I realize what a gift I’ve been given with the writing and with the character of Ares, because it’s the kind of character that is just open for exploration.
Well, I think just with the characters naturally growing older there becomes more serious issues, but they’re following the books, but there’s always going to be some things added in like the diner scene in the first season that wasn’t in the books, but I’m so happy it was included in the scripts because that’s what I auditioned with, and I went, ‘Oh, there’s so much fun to be had here.’
The kids are growing, and they’re not so much kids anymore. I think it naturally follows the progression of what happens to you as you’re going through your teens. I think that’s why the books always connected, because I feel like people saw a bit of themselves in these characters and the awkward phases that you go through, but if you got friends it doesn’t feel quite as awkward. And I feel like at the heart of Percy Jackson, that’s really what they’re about.”
How ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Season 2 Could Evolve Into a More Mature Saga
The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians ended on a thrilling note, with Ares vowing vengeance on half-bloods following his defeat at the hands of Percy. Luke Castellan (Charlie Bushnell) was revealed as the traitor at Camp Half-Blood, and Grover set off on his own quest to find Pan. Unlike the first season, in which Percy’s mother Sally Jackson was saved by Hades, the stakes are substantially higher in the second one.
