As the hype continues to grow all around and upside down for the upcoming fifth and final season of Netflix’s supernatural wonderhit Stranger Things, while the cast continues to grow with legendary newcomers like Linda Hamilton, there’s now word of a new director who’s joining the ranks. Per an official report straight from Netflix, Dan Trachtenberg is set to helm an episode of what will likely be a gargantuan Season 5, though it hasn’t been announced yet which episode that will be.

Stranger Things is a supernatural adventure series, created by the Duffer Brothers for Netflix. The series grew by leaps and bounds with each season, acquiring a monumental fanbase while the lore constantly expanded with more new characters and the episodes themselves growing to an incredible runtime comparable to that of feature films. By and far the show has become one of Netflix’s greatest and most lucrative achievements, and the epic conclusion to the ongoing conflict with the Upside Down is soon to hit the small screen everywhere. Returning cast will of course include the entire main ensemble, with Millie Bobby Brown one last time as superhuman Eleven, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair, Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler, and Gaten Matarazzo Dustin Henderson among numerous others. The latest newcomer announced is none other than Terminator alum Linda Hamilton, whose role is still undisclosed. Jodie Foster was also rumored to be in the running, but that was swiftly debunked.
Very little is known about the outline of Season 5, aside from what us viewers recall from the catastrophic finale of Season 4. After Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) briefly dies from her wounds caused by Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), the Upside Down fully breaches the town of Hawkins, causing enormous fissures from every corner of the town to rupture and converge, doomed to bring forth the horrors living in the alternate dimension, including the long-awaited Mindflayer. From there, we’ll have to wait and see just how Eleven manages to handle it all with her now truly unlocked powers. We can assume that the production budget will be immense, and that each of the eight planned episodes will again have an extensive runtime of at least an hour each. The title of the first episode was recently revealed to be titled “The Crawl”, though there is no context given beyond that.

Aside from the Duffer Brothers themselves, the first director announced for the finale season is Dan Trachtenberg. It’s not known which of the eight episodes he’ll be at the helm of, but he’s got plenty of experience with horror and the supernatural to bring to the table. His previous work includes the 2016 science fiction horror flick 10 Cloverfield Lane, which included an incredible performance from John Goodman as the main antagonist. He also directed an episode of acclaimed series Black Mirror called “Playtest”, an episode of hit superhero dark comedy The Boys, and then surprised just about everyone with his contributory installment to the popular Predator franchise called Prey (2022). The film, which flipped the usual futuristic formula on its head and opted for a setting of American’s Northern Great Plains in 1719, received outstanding acclaim from fans and critics.
Season 5 of Stranger Things currently does not have a premiere date, as the production is currently on hold due to the ongoing WGA strike, but aspirations are obviously set for sometime in 2024.
