Sacha Baron Cohen’s Iconic Alter Ego Ali G Set for a Rumored Comeback
Jul 7, 2023
Sacha Baron Cohen is rumored to reprise the role that catapulted him to fame, Ali G. Cohen is known for his character-driven comedy. Fans have been yearning for the revival of the classic character.
The news that Cohen is currently working on Ali G projects was shared by Above the Line editor Jeff Sneider in a podcast appearance. Although Sneider was cautious in his revelation, his hints were as tantalizing as the aroma wafting from a gourmet kitchen. He suggested that the mercurial Cohen is orchestrating an Ali G project, but with the secrecy of a magician guarding his tricks.
Sneider’s words were careful yet filled with hope. He acknowledged that Cohen, ever the enigmatic showman, is a master at concealing his plans. Even so, Sneider couldn’t help but share his speculation that this could very well be a film project in the making, rather than a TV series.
This wouldn’t be surprising, as Cohen’s recent trajectory has seen him create cinematic masterpieces like Borat and its sequel. The possibility of Ali G gracing the silver screen again has sent ripples of anticipation through the entertainment circles.
The editor shared during the podcast:
“I think there’s even people in the comments who are like, ‘Who’s Ali G?'” I do think he can manage to prank a lot of people. I just think we need more comedies in general. This weekend, No Hard Feelings is tracking for a $12 million opening, and that’s not going to get Hollywood excited about making more comedies, but it takes people like Sacha Baron Cohen who can go and do their own thing, and don’t need permission or whatever.”

Ali G’s Audacious Legacy and Cohen’s Secretive Brilliance
HBO Entertainment
For the uninitiated, Ali G was a character that portrayed a parody of the urban culture, particularly the bling-laden, opulent lifestyle of rappers who have struck gold. Ali G was the epitome of audacity, conducting interviews with the rich and influential, and often managing to make them squirm by navigating the conversation down treacherous paths. This character was an artistic blend of satire and reality, which made it so appealing to a vast audience.
The origins of Ali G can be traced back to Da Ali G Show. The show aired for three seasons between 2000 and 2004 on Channel 4 and later HBO. The show was a smorgasbord of audacious humor and satire.
Cohen’s portrayal of Ali G was so captivating that it led to a full-length feature film titled Ali G InDaHouse in 2002. The film was a roller-coaster ride that even saw Ali G momentarily becoming a member of the Parliament.
What is most astonishing is Cohen’s ability to operate under the radar. Sneider recalls how Borat 2 was made completely stealthily, and only came to light during its test screenings. It seems Cohen like to work on his projects in deep secrecy. He ensures that they remain under wraps and only make them known once they are ready for release.
Sacha Baron Cohen’s potential revival of Ali G is an electrifying prospect. With his history of meticulous planning and execution, it’s hard to predict what’s cooking. But if the Ali G project does materialize, it promises to be a delicious treat for comedy lovers who have been starved for quality content.
