Avengers: Secret Wars
is slated for 2027 – the decision on director will be crucial after 2023 Marvel struggles.
Sam Raimi finally shares his thoughts on the rumors he will be directing Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire back in the title role, and his hopes of being asked to helm Avengers: Secret Wars in the MCU. Both projects have been the subject of much discussion on social media in the last few months, and now Raimi has had the chance to set the record straight on all counts.
Spider-Man Release Date May 1, 2002 Runtime 121 Tagline With great power comes great responsibility. Franchise Marvel
Raimi has successfully dipped his feet into the Marvel movie pool with his Spider-Man movies and 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and he would not hesitate to do so again. However, before that, there is the little matter of speculative rumors about Raimi being tapped to finally direct a fourth Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movie. Recently, Raimi finally broke his silence on that topic, telling CBR:
“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet. I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!’
I’m not sure, but I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home opened the multiversal door for Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to suit up again as their respective versions of Peter Parker, and some fans have not let go of the possibility of both actors being seen again sometime before the end of the Multiverse Saga.
Could Sam Raimi Direct Avengers: Secret War?
Marvel Studios
Speaking to ScreenGeek, Raimi addressed the possibility of instead returning to the Marvel fold to direct the multiverse story-concluding Avengers: Secret Wars. There is no doubt that he would be more than up for taking on the job, but only if Marvel Studios actually ask him. He said:
“I love 90% of the Marvel heroes that I’ve read in the great Stan Lee Marvel Universe comic books. I would love to work with Marvel again. They haven’t reasonably asked me to. I hope they had a good experience with me. They haven’t asked me yet. I hope they do.”
There are currently many names being tossed around in relation to the Avengers team-up movie, which is aiming to be the franchise’s biggest film since Avengers: Endgame became the penultimate movie in the Infinity Saga, and concluded a long and successful road from 2008’s Iron Man. Since that movie, the MCU has struggled to escape the shadow of expectation cast by the epic culmination of more than a decade of storytelling that defied all doubters and proved that an interconnected cinematic universe can be a reality.

Marvel Studios are currently licking their wounds after a less than stellar performance in 2023. However, there has been some good news in the fact that Deadpool & Wolverine, the only theatrical release from the franchise this year, is still the most anticipated movie of 2024. With several big movies now planned for 2025, including the arrival of The Fantastic Four, thoughts will soon be turning to that final decision over who will follow the Russo Brothers in attempting to deliver a suitable close to one of the MCU’s huge sagas.
Avengers: Secret Wars
is currently slated for release on May 7, 2027.
