‘Scrubs’ Reboot is Officially in Development at ABC With Bill Lawrence

Dec 6, 2024

A return to Sacred Heart Hospital is getting closer to reality! A reboot of Scrubs has long been rumored with fans stoked about a potential return of the medical sitcom, but it has all been talk…until now. ABC is in early development on the project after securing the involvement of the man who made the show a definitive series of its era.

Per Variety, ABC is officially in early development on the Scrubs reboot after striking a deal with series creator Bill Lawrence. The executive producer is already under an exclusive deal with Warner Bros. TV which consists of four series, so Scrubs had to be worked into that deal, which finally worked out after weeks of negotiations. This will allow Lawrence to work on the reboot for 20th TV and ABC, but the deal does not include him being the series’ showrunner, which will be found as the show continues its development. Lawrence is already tied to Shrinking and Bad Monkey for Apple TV+, along with a potential fourth season of Ted Lasso for the streamer, and he’s also attached to an HBO comedy series with Steve Carell.

With Lawrence onboard, the next big step will be making sure it can secure the main cast members of the original series, which includes Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison and John C. McGinley. They have all expressed interest in returning should a reboot be made, and now that Lawrence is in the fold, their return should be easier to ensure once proper deals for them are in place. One original cast member, Judy Reyes, is factored into the early plans for the series, but her reprisal has some caveats. Reyes left the original show ahead of its final season, and she’s currently a series regular on another popular ABC series, High Potential, which has strong chances for a Season 2 renewal. While her return is uncertain, reports indicate that there is a world in which she could do both shows without any problems.

‘Scrubs’ Had a Very Successful Run on NBC And ABC

Created by Lawrence, Scrubs looked into the lives of the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital and takes its name from a person of a lower ranking, because at the start of the show, most of the characters were medical interns (it’s also a play on surgical scrubs, adding to its hospital connection). The film’s humor is mostly of the slapstick variety, with most of its stories told through vignettes courtesy of the daydreams of John “J.D.” Dorian (Braff).

The series ran from 2001-2010 on NBC while its final two seasons aired on ABC, after the former network announced it would not be renewing the show during its seventh season. In all, Scrubs aired 182 episodes and was warmly received by critics and fans alike. During its run, it received 17 Emmy nominations, with its first nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series coming during its fourth season. The show received the nomination again the following year, while Braff was also nominated during Season 4 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The Golden Globes particularly loved Braff, nominating him for Best Actor in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical three years in a row (2005, 2006 and 2007). The series also received the prestigious Peabody Award in 2006.

Due to its popularity, Scrubs also attracted a slew of famous guest stars, including Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Heather Graham, Michael J. Fox, and more. Its final season in 2010 also featured Dave Franco as a series regular, who has since gone on to carve out a very successful film career. The show also benefited its main cast, with Braff’s directorial debut Garden State premiering during the series’ run to stellar reviews and solid box office.
