Shawn Levy Switches Gears With A Somber WWII Drama With Mark Ruffalo
Apr 18, 2023
Typically, when Netflix debuts a teaser trailer for a film or TV series, the show is right around the corner. The studio doesn’t like to promote things too far away from a release date—unless it’s something Netflix is incredibly excited about. So, with that in mind, the studio debuted the teaser for “All the Light We Cannot See,” a big-budget event series from director Shawn Levy, featuring a great cast, well ahead of its November release.

As seen in the teaser, “All the Light We Cannot See” is a WWII-era drama series that follows the life of a blind French girl and her father as they flee Nazi-occupied Paris. The series doesn’t just completely focus on the father-daughter duo, but we also see life from the other side, as a young man is enlisted in the Nazi regime to act as a spy, listening in on illegal broadcasts.
As mentioned, it’s incredibly rare for Netflix to hype something up this early, but you can see why when you watch this teaser. This is definitely one of the more expensive series for Netflix’s 2023 calendar, especially when you consider it’s directed by Shawn Levy and stars folks like Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie. Levy, in particular, is an interesting name to see attached to this project, as he typically reserves his directing gigs for more blockbuster film work, such as “Free Guy” and the forthcoming “Deadpool 3.”
“All the Light We Cannot See” is set to debut on Netflix on November 2. You can watch the teaser below.
Here’s the synopsis:
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, All The Light We Cannot See is a groundbreaking limited series that follows the story of Marie-Laure, a blind French girl and her father, Daniel LeBlanc, who flee German-occupied Paris with a legendary diamond to keep it from falling into the hands of the Nazis. Relentlessly pursued by a cruel Gestapo officer who seeks to possess the stone for his own selfish means, Marie-Laure and Daniel soon find refuge in St. Malo, where they take up residence with a reclusive uncle who transmits clandestine radio broadcasts as part of the resistance. Yet here in this once-idyllic seaside city, Marie-Laure’s path also collides inexorably with the unlikeliest of kindred spirits: Werner, a brilliant teenager enlisted by Hitler’s regime to track down illegal broadcasts, who instead shares a secret connection to Marie-Laure as well as her faith in humanity and the possibility of hope.
Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner over the course of a decade, All The Light We Cannot See tells a story of the extraordinary power of human connection — a beacon of light that can lead us through even the darkest of times.
