‘Sherlock’ Producer Says There Is “A Future” For The Show, If The Actors Want To Do It

Oct 2, 2024

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been nearly eight years since the end of “Sherlock.” In that time, we’ve seen the two leads, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, explode in popularity. So, is there a chance that we could see everyone return for a new season of episodes? Maybe.

According to a new interview with Deadline, producer Sue Vertue talked about the possibility of a new season of “Sherlock.” Clearly, she’s open to the idea, but it really does all come down to the actors and if they have a desire to return.
“I’ve still got the set in storage somewhere, which is probably rotten, to be honest with you. It’s just getting everybody aligned, it’s getting the actors to want to do it,” Vertue teased. “We love that show and there is a future for it. One day. Maybe. If everyone wants to do it.”
For those who haven’t watched the show, “Sherlock” is one of the many adaptations of the popular Sherlock Holmes stories, with Cumberbatch in the role of the sleuth. The series became a huge hit because of the chemistry between Cumberbatch and Freeman, as well as the incredibly clever writing and presentation.

This isn’t the first time this year that someone teased the possibility of new “Sherlock.” In another interview with Deadline, series co-creator Mark Gatiss talked about his desire to return to the world for a possible feature film.
The feature film idea isn’t all that crazy. Right now, production has begun on a “Peaky Blinders” film at Netflix, after that show ended. And let’s not forget “Community” is coming back for a film sometime soon. So, the precedent is there. We’ll just have to wait and see if the stars can align.
