Sofía Vergara Plays the Godmother Of The Miami Drug Cartel In January-Set Netflix Series
Sep 21, 2023
It sucks when it always has to frame Latinx and Hispanic people as drug lords—and it’s often the only kind of representation they get in film and television—but the flip side is that it’s nice to see something like “Narcos” become its own cottage industry and give roles to Latinx people (yes, that’s contradictory and complicated—crime always fascinates the public— but such is life, and sometimes it’s one step at a time or progress. So, the next sort-of (but unrelated) spin-off of these related tales is “Griselda,” which is executive produced by “Narcos” and “Narcos: Mexico” showrunner & directing team Eric Newman and Colombian filmmaker Andrés Baiz. They have helped create the “Godmother” of Miami drug trafficking story in “Griselda” starring Sofia Vergara (also an exec-producer on the six-episode limited series).

“Griselda” is based on the life of Griselda Blanco, a notorious cocaine trafficker in the 1970s through the 2000s. The miniseries will premiere on Netflix in January 2024.
“Griselda” stars the aforementioned Sofía Vergara (Griselda Blanco), plus Alberto Guerra (Dario Sepúlveda), Christian Tappan (Arturo Mesa), Martín Rodríguez (Rivi Ayala), Juliana Aidén Martinez (June Hawkins), and Vanessa Ferlito (Carmen Gutiérrez).
Here’s the official synopsis:
GRISELDA is inspired by the life of the savvy and ambitious Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. In 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her expertly navigate between business and family, leading her to become widely known as “the Godmother.”
“Griselda” was created by Eric Newman & Doug Miro & Ingrid Escajeda & Carlo Bernard, and Baiz directs the series. The six-episode limited series with 50-minute eps premieres globally on Netflix on January 25, 2024. Watch the first teaser trailer below.
