Steven Spielberg’s mysterious next film gets a release date. Now 77 years old, Spielberg has been a working director for the majority of his life. He is known for hits such as Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial as well as more recent acclaimed works such as The Post, Bridge of Spies, and The Fabelmans. Last year, Spielberg served as a producer for the Bradley Cooper biopic film Maestro.
Per Deadline, Spielberg’s untitled next film now has a release date. The film is set for release on May 15, 2026. Universal describes the film as an event film, but there have not been additional details about this project revealed alongside this announcement.
What Is Steven Spielberg’s Next Project?
Spielberg Will Return To Science-Fiction
Earlier this year, it was announced that Spielberg would be directing an original science fiction film. The plot of said film has yet to be revealed, but it was mentioned that the film would have something to do with UFOs. The announcement of this Spielberg project meant an exciting return to form for Spielberg, who made a splash in this genre with Close Encounters of the Third Kind back in 1977. While Spielberg has ventured into other sci-fi along the way, the sounds of this project suggest greater authorial control.
While revealing very little, the release date news seems to confirm this fact. It says that the film is created and directed by Spielberg, implying that the director has a good amount of authorial control with the project. Though Spielberg is listed as a creator on the film, he is not the screenwriter. That title goes to David Koepp, who has been a frequent collaborator of the Jurassic Park director. Koepp’s writing credits include Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Combined with its titleless status, the faraway release date may make this Spielberg project seem fairly intangible. There is likely good reason for the 2026 release date, however, as Spielberg has multiple other projects coming down the pike, including acting as a producer on Twisters, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, Transformers One, and another sequel, Jurassic World 4. While Spielberg’s role on such projects is lesser than that of directing, they will still likely time consuming. Hopefully, the relatively far-out release date for his next directorial effort will allow the director to develop a great next film.
Spielberg’s next movie releases on May 15, 2026.
