‘Stranger Things’ Finale Expands Theatrical Release After Tickets Sell Out
Jan 1, 2026
Anticipation for the Stranger Things finale has reached a fever pitch, with 1.1 million people now having RSVP’d to watch the episode in theaters. The fifth season of the Duffer brothers’ acclaimed Netflix series has been released in three stages, presumably to build hype between each drop of episodes. Volume 1 arrived on Nov. 26, with Volume 2 following on Dec. 25, leaving only the final episode to be released on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31) through New Year’s Day (Jan. 1). The conclusion of the epic saga is set to go out with a bang, as the two-hour finale is getting a limited theatrical release in the US and Canada. Tickets for the event have been snapped up en masse, prompting more locations to be added to keep up with growing fan demand. The theatrical release of the Stranger Things finale was originally announced in late October, with over 350 theaters confirmed to be participating in screening the episode. However, according to Deadline, that number grew to 500+ locations when reservations opened in early December. Now, Ross Duffer, one-half of the creative sibling duo behind the series, has revealed on Instagram that the release has expanded further. “Over 1.1 million of you have already RSVPd to the finale screenings on NYE and New Year’s Day, and more than 3,500 showtimes across 620+ theaters are already completely full,” he wrote in the caption of the post (shared below). “What a way to close out a ten-year journey—together. Maybe we’ll see some of you in LA.” The last line of the post indicates that Ross and his brother might show up to select screenings of the Stranger Things finale, but attendees shouldn’t get their hopes up for the cast being in tow, as several members of the star-studded ensemble recently attended a private screening of the episode at the Paris Theater in New York City. Millie Bobby Brown noticeably skipped out on the watch party, which raised eyebrows among fans, especially amid on-set bullying and harassment claims surrounding the show – but it turns out the actress had a very valid reason for not joining her costars for the occasion.
Could a ‘Stranger Things’ Movie Ever Happen?
The theatrical release of the Stranger Things finale is already proving to be immensely popular, with fans reserving seats at such high volumes that new locations have been added to give more people the chance to watch it in cinemas. It should be noted that most of the screenings are not traditional ticketed events and instead carry a fee that is converted into a concession voucher for the theater. However, admissions for the Stranger Things finale (so far) position it ahead of Netflix’s most popular movie of all time, which secured 700K in pre-sales two days before its theatrical debut, suggesting that the Duffer brothers’ franchise might have a future on the big screen, as people appear to be invested in the world they have so lovingly crafted.
While ticket sales for the Stranger Things finale event have hinted at the opportunities the creative pair might have to expand their saga, there are currently no plans for any movies in the franchise. The first official spin-off is, in fact, an animated series, titled Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, from showrunner Eric Robles, which will tell a story that takes place between the second and third season of the mainline show. According to Netflix, the episodes will feature several characters from the world of Hawkins that fans already know and love – but with a twist that is certain to shake things upside down when it makes its streaming debut in 2026.
Stranger Things Season 5, Volumes 1 and 2 are currently available to stream on Netflix. The final episode will arrive on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31) for US audiences, and in the early hours of New Year’s Day (Jan. 1) for UK viewers.
